For the second consecutive year, Cicero-North Syracuse girls golfer Brianna Sovring ended her season on the hills of SUNY-Delhi’s course, playing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament.
Sovring joined 79 other players from across New York in the field, which was fortunate to get started on Saturday, after all of the rains from late last week.
During the first round, Sovring shot an 89, which put her in a tie for 43rd place, roughly in the middle of the field. Rochester Mercy’s Christine Schmitt led with a 72, with Auburn’s Larissa Carter tied for seventh, five shots back.
As Sunday’s final round unfolded, Sovring struggled a bit more, but still managed to post a 92 that gave her a two-day score of 181 and a solo 46th-place finish, exactly where she finished in 2012, though her score improved six shots from a year ago.
Schmitt pulled away for the individual championship, adding a 71 to finish at 143, six strokes better than Rye’s Alexis Hios. Carter, with a last-day 74, pulled herself up to third place at 151.
The other Section III golfers were scattered through the field. Auburn seventh-grader Lindsay May tied for 18th place at 163, one shot ahead of Baldwinsvlle’s Katie Walsh, while Molly Hair, with a 169, shared 28th place.
Fayetteville-Manlius senior Allison Donella was at 182, one shot behind Sovring, while Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Amanda Snizek, with a two-day total of 185, finished two shots clear of J-D’s Victoria Roney and Auburn’s Kaitlin Hylwa had a 193.
