Tournament play for the Cazenovia boys golf team commenced Saturday at Hidden Valley Golf Club in Whitesboro, with the Lakers facing 11 other sides in the Warrior Classic.
Getting a team total of 408, just two behind OHSL Liberty division leader Westhill, Cazenovia found itself in fourth place. New Hartford won with 372 as host Whitesboro posted 391.
Charlie Schaffner set the Lakers’ pace with an 18-hole score of 78. Trevor Gatzke finished with an 81, while Cody Thorp had an 84 and Brian Demo shot 85. New Hartford star Derek Bard won the individual title with a blistering 67, six shots ahead of Westhill’s Gus Gosson.
Just before that, the Lakers got a critical victory last Friday afternoon, proving to be impressive in a 205-230 decision over Marcellus.
Matt Schaffner nearly matched par at Cazenovia Country Club, shooting a 37 to lead all individuals. Gatzke had a 39, while Charlie Schaffner had a 41 and Thorp added a 42.
They all did better than the Mustangs’ top players, Jackson Mordaunt and Marc Tompkins, who had matching totals of 43 as Brennan Files added a 44.
To start its week, Cazenovia lost a tight 216-220 decision to Skaneateles, the second time in less than a week that it had lost a close decision against those other Lakers.
This match was at Skaneateles Country Club, though, and while Thorp still shot a 41, he trailed the top two Skaneateles players, Doug Pickney (38) and Jeremy Sisson (39), when the day was done.
In a three-way girls match last Monday, Cazeonvia hosted both Westhill and CBA, shooting 211 to beat the Warriors’ total of 226, but finishing behind the Brothers’ total of 193.
Danielle Mevec shot a 51 at Cazenovia Country Club, while CBA’s Ellie Baumgartner led all individuals with a 43. Shannon Bunce paced Westhill with a 53.
Then Cazenovia tied Skaneateles, each scoring 197, in another three-way match on Tuesday, both of them ahead of host East Syracuse-Minoa’s total of 218 at the Arrowhead course.
Continuing the round-robin, Cazenovia went head-to-head with CBA on Thursday and lost, 181-196, to the Brothers. Maggie Carpenter shot a 42, one shot behind the Brothers’ Ellie Baumgartner, who led everyone with a 41, while Mevec finished with a 47.
Chittenango returned to action last Wednesday afternoon and beat Marcellus 204-219 at Tuscarora, where Meg Arnold shot a 42 for the Bears and Megan Garity added a 47. Mary Colella paced the Mustangs with a 52.
The Bears made it back-to-back wins on Thursday, taking out Westhill 207-236 at Camillus Country Club. Gearity shot 47 for the second straight day, this time beating Arnold by one shot as no Warrior player shot better than 59.
