Skaneateles girls set 4×100 relay school record

As it inched toward Monday’s showdown with Cazenovia, the Skaneateles girls track and field team continued to handle the preliminary parts of its OHSL Liberty division schedule and also made some history along the way.

That history came out of last Friday’s appearance in Christian Brothers Academy’s Brother Basilian Invitational at Alibrandi Stadium, where the Lakers’ 4×100 relay team shattered a school record.

Amanda Wetmore, Katelyn Ellison, Taylor Woodruff and Laurel Parker combined to beat the field with a time of 51.8 seconds, a clocking that shattered the old school mark of 52.2 seconds and won the race, too, as Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (52.1 seconds) took the runner-up spot.

Skaneateles also prevailed in the 4×400, where Madeline Adams and Anna Barnett joined Ellison and Woodruff as the Lakers, in 4:16.2, pulled away from VVS (4:23.5) and the field. Adams, on her own, claimed second in 2:26.8 behind Oneida’s Kim DeCarr (2:23.6) in the 800-meter run.

That wasn’t the only win, either. Kaitlyn Neal went 4:58.1 to claim the 1,500-meter run over CBA’s Gabby Schug (5:00.4) and the field, while Raenah Campbell ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17 seconds flat, half a second better than Carthage’s Kristy Williams.

Woodruff went 15 feet 3 inches for second place in the long jump, while Julia Willcox and Mary Buck were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the high jump. Keely Gregg and Grace Belasin tied for third in the pole vault. The Lakers also finished third (11:09.1) in the 4×800 relay as Willcox was third in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.3 and Olivia Gage took fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:06.0).

Three days earlier, Skaneateles prevailed, 93-48, over Hannibal, part of a split where the Skaneateles boys side took an 87-54 loss to the Warriors.

Willcox and Rachel Baker both won a pair of events for the girls Lakers. Willcox ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14 flat and moved on to the high jump, where she cleared 4’8” to take that title.

Meanwhile, Baker won the shot put with a toss of 27’7 ¼” and also claimed the discus, heaving it 69’3”. Keely Gregg chimed in when she won the pole vault by topping 7 feet.

Back on the oval, Willcox, teaming with Adams, Gage and Liz Dwyer, pushed the Lakers to first in the 4×800 relay in 10:27.7. Adams went on to run 3,000 meters in 11:19.3.

Woodruff, victorious in the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds, helped Ellison, Parker and Wetmore in the 4×100 relay (52.2 seconds) and, with Parker, Gage and Jane Gaffney, completed a relay sweep in the 4×400 with a time of 4:28.9.

Ellison also had a title, needing 27.3 seconds to beat the field in the 200-meter dash. Anna Barnett was first in the 400-meter dash (1:06.3) after Campbell claimed the 100 hurdles in 16.8 seconds. Kaitlyn Neal had a top time of 2:23.3 in the 800-meter run.

For the Skaneateles boys team, Carson Schwab offered another highlight in the pole vault, winning with a clearance of 12 feet as Aristotle Hristodoulou claimed the long jump, going 17’ 11 ½”.

The Lakers won just twice in individual running events, Dan Wolfanger going 23.9 seconds in the 200 sprint and Dan Kringer beating the field in the 100 in 11.6 seconds.

Then Wolfanger, Patrick Biver, Nick Smolenski and Matt Clymer combined to take the 4×400 relay in 3:44.5. Hannibal’s Jordan Skipworth won four events – the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, triple jump and high jump.

During the Brother Basilian meet at CBA, Schwab cleared 11’6” in the pole vault, second behind East Syracuse-Minoa’s Corey Vollmer, who went 12’7” as Dan Sakal (11 feet) got fifth place. Nate Molnar was fifth in the shot put (41 feet) as Eli Goodell was sixth in the high jump.

In running events, the Lakers rose to second place in the 4×800 in 8:57.6, topped only by Onondaga, who won in 8:46.8. Clymer was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.3, with Biver fifth in the 800 in a time of 2:03.6.
