Again, the Baldwinsville track and field teams found themselves on the wrong end of a decision against a major rival.
Despite strong individual performances in last Wednesday’s meets against Liverpool, the Bees fell to the Warriors on both sides, including a 77-64 loss for the boys side at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium and an 81-60 defeat for the girls at LHS Stadium.
Top boys sprinter Shay Sargeant remains out, and without him the Bees saw Liverpool get double wins from Ryheim Lawes in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and Gaurab Bhattacharya in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles. Steve Keegan did get first place in the 400-meter dash in 53.6 seconds.
Moving to the distance events, B’ville only broke through when Alec Peinkofer took the mile in four minutes, 30.6 seconds. Peinkofer did combine with Jack Martin, Andy Fleming and Josh Perez as the Bees won the 4×800 relay in 8:13.4.
In fact, the Bees swept all three relays. Brian Mahar, Jeff Mahar, Nate Wicks and Dan Walker ran the 4×100 in 43.6 seconds, and in the 4×400 Wicks, Fleming, Dan Walker and Jeff Mahar needed 3:39.4 to take first place.
Of the six field events, the Bees only won twice, including the discus, where Pat McNamara threw it 120 feet 5 inches. Shawn Calnan cleared exactly 6 feet for a victory in the high jump as, for Liverpool, Lawes took the long jump and Travis Chewning-Kulick topped 13 feet in the pole vault.
B’ville had plenty of high individual finishes in the girls meet against Liverpool, but the Warriors won every field event except the high jump, where Emily Soeder cleared 5 feet to get the top spot.
Back on the track, Mackenzie Ross, owner of the fastest 800-meter time in Section III this season, teamed with Meghan Hull, Kelley Hull and Nicole Piontkowski to win the 4×800 relay in 10:17.43.
Rachael Miller prevailed in the 1,500-meter run in 4:47.36.Cierra Allen broke the one-minute mark in the 400-meter dash (59.60 seconds) for another title. For the Warriors, Ore Akinpelu led the way, taking the 200 sprint (26.41 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:04.97) and running a leg in the 4×400 relay.
For both of B’ville’s sides, big weekend events remained, starting with the boys going to the New Hartford Invitational Friday and picking up 41 points to finish fifth in a 26-team field. CiCero-North Syracuse, with 94.5 points, claimed the team title.
But no one caught the Bees in the 4×800, where Peinkofer, Fleming, Perez and Martin posted the fastest Section III time of the spring with 8:00.60, nearly 20 seconds ahead of runner-up New Hartford (8:21.50) and the field. In the distance medley relay, Wicks joined Peinkofer, Fleming and Perez as B’ville won again in 10:31.40, with Niskayuna (11:05.90) and the pack far behind.
Then Wicks and Jeff Mahar went 1-2 in the 400 sprint, as Wicks went to the front in 51.31 seconds, holding off Mahar, who was second with 51.49 seconds. Conner Ross added a fifth in the 800 in 2:02.57 as Pat McNamara was sixth in the discus, heaving it 129 feet, while Calnan tied for sixth (5’8”) in the high jump and Logan Maar shared sixth (10’6”) in the pole vault.
It just so happened that the B’ville girls track team also finished fifth in Saturday’s Rome Invitational at Rome Free Academy Stadium, earning 48.5 points, though it was Bethlehem (84.5 points) in the top spot this time around.
For the Bees, a highlight came in the 1,600 sprint medley, where Angelica Tomasello, Gabby Jordan, Cierra Allen and Kelley Hull, in a time of 4:22.14, topped second-place Canton (4:28.48) by more than six seconds. Stephanie Vasteno joined Jordan, Allen and Tomasello as the Bees took second (50.25 seconds) to Liverpool (50.04 seconds) in the 4×100 relay.
Miller made her way to second place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.01, trailing only Marcellus’ Rachel Garn (4:52.01), who would also beat Mackenzie Ross in an 800-meter showdown, Ross finishing in 2:17.70 as Garn, in 2:14.99, posted the fastest time of the spring in Section III.
Marissa Lahtrop tied Bethlehem’s Carolyn Wagner for fifth (1:00.96) in the 400 sprint and Meghan Hull got sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, with Emily Thompson sixth in the 3,000-meter run. The Bees took fifth in the 4×800 relay as Vasteno, on her own, was fifth (13.48 seconds) in the 100 sprint and Hannah Wood was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.79 seconds.
Soeder, again clearing 5 feet, was fourth in the high jump, while Carlie McNamara went 92’5” for fifth place in the discus. Melissa Voyer was eighth in the long jump.
