Somehow, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team had escaped the gauntlet of its opening week without a blemish, getting past close calls against Homer and LaFayette and surviving a double-overtime classic with Baldwinsville.
But the next week of play offered a respite for the Lakers, who earned the no. 3 spot in the first state Class C rankings of the season.
Hosting Onondaga last Tuesday afternoon, Cazenovia was steady in its attack and, for once, stress-free in the second half as it cruised past the Tigers 15-5 for its fourth win in a row.
The Lakers never had one outsized scoring spurt, but didn’t need it, gaining a 5-1 edge in the first quarter and expanding that lead to 9-1 by halftime.
Kyle Brown, with four goals and three assists, matched Connor Cannizzaro’s point total as Cannizzaro scored twice and added five assists. Brad Nardella had a three-goal hat trick, with Connor Race adding two goals and two assists. P.J. Brown and Alex Sullivan each got one goal and one assist as Travis McGrath contributed a goal of his own.
When the heavy rains returned later in the week, Friday’s game with Bishop Ludden got moved down the road to Chittenango High School and pushed back to Saturday, but that did little to stop the Lakers, who shut out the Gaelic Knights 19-0.
Cannizzaro and Ryan Cook each managed four goals, with Cannizzaro adding three assists and Cook two assists, with Kyle Brown scoring five times. Sullivan managed five assists to go with his lone tally as Henry Mann stepped up with a goal and three assists. Jake Falge, Jake Wilson, A.J. Davis and Kevin Porter also scored.
Cazenovia plays three more times this week, hosting Jordan-Elbridge and going to Manlius-Pebble Hill before a Saturday non-league test against Watertown.
