Still waiting for a full break in the lingering bad weather, some of the area’s high school track and field teams made their way to Bragman Stadium for last Friday’s Cicero-North Syracuse Relays.

On the boys side, Jamesville-DeWitt had a strong showing, getting to third place with 44 points, trailed only by host C-NS (66.33 points) and Baldwinsville (48 points). East Syracuse-Minoa and CBA both finished with 12 points.

It was Charlie Scheftic and Davis Elmore teaming up to win the discus for the Red Rams. Their third and fourth-place individual efforts led to a combined distance of 220 feet 4 inches, more than five feet ahead of Phoenix (214’10”) and the rest of the field.

Dylan Volk keyed J-D’s title in the triple jump, finishing second among individuals with a best attempt of 40’4 ½”, while Joe Murphy was ninth. Their combined leaps of 76’11 ½” was more than two and a half feet better than runner-up Corcoran as Murphy and Taumeras Howard later got third place (10’10”) in the high jump.

For J-D, Nate Sturgeon won the individual 110-meter high hurdles in 16.37 seconds, the only time under 17 seconds as he and Robert Murphy got second place (34.68 seconds) to C-NS (34.19) among the duos in the event. Sturgeon and Murphy added a fifth in the 400 hurdles relay.

Howard, Zach Liebmann, Dylan Volk and Sean Mulvihill were second (46.02 seconds), again to C-NS (45.52 seconds), in the 4×100 relay, while CBA’s quartet of Dametrius Brown, Deshawn Salter, Colin McGraw and Jake Dinger fourth in 46.63 seconds.

But the Brothers fared better in the 1,600 sprint medley, where Brown, Salter, Jack Brower and Matt Stedman were second in 3:46.85, trailing only Baldwinsville, who won in 3:44.18.

ESM had its big individual moment in the long jump, where Jeff McDuffie went 21’2”, beating Indian River’s Darrius Bryant (20’5 ½”) and 37 other jumpers as McDuffie, teamed with Tom Grayer, took the team event with 39’2”, while Indian River (38’4 ½”) was second.

The Spartans, sixth in the 4×100 (47.02 seconds), also took sixth place in the mile relay with four times amounting to 19:43.16 and got eighth in the sprint medley, while CBA took eighth in the 4×400 and 4×800.

In the girls portion of the C-NS meet, J-D had 26 points and put itself in sixth place, while ESM, with 16 points, tied for seventh.

Many of those points were earned in the shot put, where Tangela Hightower and Brooke DeRoberts, second (88’3”) and third (80’11”) among individuals, respectively, had their combined throws of 169’2” prove more than 16 feet better than runner-up C-NS.

Individually, Patrece Martin had the top triple jump off 33’1”, edging C-NS’s Jade Jenkins by a single inch, with Martin and Mackenzie Maxam fourth (59’7”) on the team side.

Rachel Fairbanks beat 53 other runners and won the individual mile in 5:18.94, but the team only finished sixth as ESM’s quartet of Natalie Marra, Gabby Pallotta, Maria Miner and Brittany Kubecka gained third place in 23:16.60.

But the Rams were third in the 4×100, where Martin, Maxam, Taylor-Rae Danforth and Ally Fox got to the line in 53.27 seconds. Hightower and Jesenia Haynes made their way to fifth place (52’2”) in the shot put. Danforth and Allison Semmel were sixth in the 100 hurdles.

ESM saw Bridget Benz and Paige Courbat rise to third in the 400 hurdles relay in 2:38.09, beating J-D (2:42.12) in fifth place. Nina Zesky’s third-place clearance of 4’8” in the high jump led to a fifth-place team performance with Ashley Sgro.

Marra, Pallotta, Juliette Miller and Grace Maring take fifth in the 4×800, with the Spartans getting sixth place in the 4×100 relay (55.96 seconds) and eighth in the 4×400. CBA’s best finish was a sixth in the sprint medley.
