Having practiced in every conceivable outdoor condition for more than a month, it only figured that the Cazenovia girls track and field team would start its 2013 season dealing with some adverse weather.
The Tully Girls Friday Night Invitational was contested as the temperature stayed around 40 degrees, a cold wind howled and rain fell through large portions of the meet.
Through it all, Ashley Winn maintained her dominance in the sprints. In the 100-meter dash, Winn’s time of 12.99 seconds was more than half a second better than Mexico’s Chelsea Beshures (13.51 seconds), who got runner-up honors.
Then, in the 200-meter dash, Winn nearly bested the field by a full second, running in 27 seconds flat as Taylor Woodruff (Skaneateles) got second place in 27.96 seconds.
Cazenovia got second place in the 4×100 relay as Winn, teaming up with Ashley Kent, Jess Macheda and Hannah Roussell, needed 55.20 seconds, a number only Corcoran (53.98 seconds) bested. Winn, Roussell, Julia Raleigh and Maria Stalder were second (4:56.44) to New Hartford (4:35.89) in the 4×400 relay.
Elsewhere, in the 4×800 relay the Lakers saw Jeanette Cudney, Colleen Stalder, Margaret Wolsey and Maureen Milmoe finish second in 10:47.33 as Skaneateles (10:17.98) prevailed.
In the 3,000-meter run, Cudney, in 11:38.14, again settled for the runner-up spot behind New Hartford’s Kim Wrate, who won in 11:25.36. Malone Gabor got to fourth (5:31.58) in the 1,500-meter run as Adrien Owens was seventh.
On her own, Kent finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.60 seconds, while Megan Stanford took fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:16.09 and Evelyn Wells was fifth (1:10.30) in the 400-meter dash. Kaitlin Rossiter was ninth in the 800-meter run (2:49.77).
Moving to field events, Liz Pittman had the big highlight, winning the pole vault as she cleared 8 feet 6 inches, with no other competitor able to do better than 7 feet.
Not stopping there, Pittman took third (14’5”) in the long jump, while Kent was fifth (30’10 ½”) in the triple jump. Tori Fischer tied for sixth in the high jump, with Holly Eberle seventh in the discus and Sarah Haley 11th in the shot put.
Lizzy Bigsby, competing in the five-event pentathlon, made her way to second place, earning 1,603 points, a number that New Hartford’s Lauren VanWagoner (1,962 points) would top.
