One more time, Cazenovia’s girls indoor track and field team made the short trip to Colgate University’s Sanford Field House and left the field far behind them.
The Lakers, with 218 points, easily withstood the challenge of Rome Free Academy (118 points), along with New Hartford, Oneida and Chittenango, to win the Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association Division I title on Friday night.
Both in sprints and in distance races, Cazenovia swept the top spots. That included a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000-meter run, where Jeanette Cudney won in 10:50.59, with Adrien Owens second (12:27.30) and Mya Walters (12:28.57) in third.
Cudney also prevailed in the 1,500-meter run in 5:10.55, where Meredith Shephard (5:40.50) was third and Katie Marshall (5:46.37) was fourth. In the 1,000-meter run, Maureen Milmoe beat the field in 3:25.99, while Colleen Stalder was third (3:28.80) and Kaitlin Rossiter was fourth.
Samantha Gates earned second in the 600-meter run (1:47.06), where Maureen Milmoe was fifth. But in the 4×800 relay, Maureen and Grace Milmoe, joined by Stalder and Cudney, earned a victory in 10:40.72, adding to a second (4:39.82) in the 4×400 relay.
Ashley Winn and Clare Costello continued to dominate the sprints. Winn ran 55 meters in 7.40 seconds and Costello was second in 7.62 seconds, and it was the same in the 300-meter dash, where Winn prevailed in 42.71 seconds and Costello (43.40 seconds) was right behind.
Together, Winn, Costello, Emily Willard and Jessie Matt rolled to a top time of 1:50.59 in the 4×200 relay, while Ashley Kent, in the 55-meter hurdles, edged RFA’s Dana Husband, 9.48 seconds to 9.67, to earn the title.
Liz Pittman took over in field events, winning the pole vault with a clearance of 8 feet and, in the triple jump, going 32’9 1/2″ to edge past Kent, who was second in 32’7″.
In the long jump, Pittman had a second-place leap of 13’7″. Sarah Haley, with a shot put toss of 27′ 1/2″, got to third place ahead of Hannah Dain (fourth) and Holly Eberle (fifth), as Willard and Tori Fischer tied for fourth in the high jump, each clearing 4’5″ ahead of Brittney Devendorf in sixth place.
On the boys side of the MVITA Division I meet, Cazenovia earned 70 points, putting them in third place behind RFA (208 points) and New Hartford (104 points), with Chittenango (42 points) taking the fourth spot.
Many of the Lakers’ points were earned in the triple jump, where Brody Kellish finished second with a leap of 35’9″. Casey Fenton was third (35’1 1/2″) and Alex Devine was third with 34’7″.
Cameron Braathen, who won the shot put at the Ben Grieve Invitational a week earlier, was third here with a toss of 43’5 1/2″, and also took third in the weight throw with 42’10 1/4″ as Ryan O’Herien finished sixth.
Sean Satchwell gave the Lakers a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter run in 10:58.04, behind the Bears’ Isaac Czarnecki (10:55.73) in second, as Satchwell also gained fifth place in the mile. Ryker Smith cleared 5’4″ for third place in the high jump, just ahead of Nick Tedesco in fifth place.
The Lakers were second out of three teams in the 4×400 relay as Sam Fellows, Will Fellows, Jay Hahn and Chad Warren posted a time of 4:09.60. It was the same in the 4×200 as O’Herien, Devine, Conner Polsin and Tyler Dunkle finished in 1:41.47 behind RFA, who won in 1:37.08.
On his own, Polsin took fourth place (7.04 seconds) in the 55 sprint, as Mitch Meigs was sixth in the 1,000 and Dunkle gained sixth in the long jump.
Chittenango’s Lucas Rogers prevailed in the 600, his time of 1:32.29 beating New Hartford’s John Siniscarco by 2.46 seconds, and Rogers also got fifth in the 300 as the Bears were third in both the 4×200 and 4×800 relays.
