Liverpool’s girls indoor track and field team continues to pace most of the field, as it did during Wednesday night’s Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena.
With a total of 50 points, the Warriors edged out Jamesville-DeWitt (45 points) for second place, again with Fayetteville-Manlius (95 points) ending up in first place. Cicero-North Syracuse, with 20 points, tied for ninth place.
Ore Akinpelu, in a time of 1:45.37, was second to East Syracuse-Minoa’s Juliette Miller (1:44.83) in the 600-meter run. Akinpelu also teamed with Abby McNamara, Juliana Basla and Morgan Mahoney to finish second (13:04.02) behind F-M (12:34.21) in the distance medley relay.
Alexus Gersbacher had her season-best showing in the triple jump, as her leap of 33 feet 3 ¾ inches got her to second place behind J-D’s Patrece Martin (34’2 ½”). Shae Shenandoah, clearing 8’6” in the pole vault, also finished second, as West Genesee’s Abby Uczen (9’9”) prevailed.
Jazmine Herbert, in the 55-meter dash, sprinted to third place in 7.67 seconds as Nottingham’s Ke’arra Allen (7.57 seconds) prevailed. Herbert also was fifth in the 300-meter dash (45.28 seconds), just behind Catherine Rowell (45.20 seconds) in fourth, as Morgan Mahoney got fifth place (3:10.40) in the 1,000-meter run.
Liverpool took fourth in the 4×400 relay, where Danielle Sims, Jessica Turner, Yasmeen Griffin and Dana Brown posted a time of 4:25.50.
C-NS got half of its points from seeing Javielle Fanizzi win the 55-meter hurdles, her time of 9.26 seconds enough to fend off Rome Free Academy’s Mariah Johnson (9.41 seconds).
Elsewhere, Fanizzi was fifth in the long jump, going 15’5”, while Jacqlynn Halstead earned third place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.66 and Nicole Watterud got fifth place (11:07.14) in the 3,000-meter run.
C-NS nearly got on even terms with Liverpool in last Tuesday’s boys portion of the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational.
Still, the Warriors, with 35 points, found its way to third place behind F-M (69 points) and Rome Free Academy (51 points), while the Northstars got 30 points and shared fourth place with Baldwinsville.
Many of the Warriors’ points came in the 3,200-meter run, where Connor Buck finished second, in 10:05.75, to F-M’s Adam Hunt (10:00.67), and Buck’s teammate, Nick LeClair, was fourth in 10:16.98 as C-NS’s Matt Crough (10:38.55) was sixth.
Travis Chewning-Kulick got second in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet 6 inches with fewer misses than Carson Schwab (Skaneateles) and Noah Paccia (Tully) as Jamesville-DeWitt’s Zach Liebmann won, clearing 13 feet.
A close contest in the shot put saw Liverpool’s Geoffrey Bell throw it 44’3 ½”, just behind Cazenovia’s Cameron Braathen (44’6”) as Bell was second and C-NS’s Joe Castaldo, who had a top throw of 43’10 ½”, slid into third place.
Morgan Austen contended for the Northstars in the 55-meter hurdles, getting to second place in 8.15 seconds, trailing only Oswego’s Cory Keefe (7.78 seconds). Liverpool’s Gaurab Bhattacharya was fourth in 8.48 seconds. Austen would also get to third place in the triple jump, going 39’10 ¼”.
Also for C-NS, Anthony Lupia worked his way to a second-place time of 2:42.61 in the 1,000-meter run as Auburn’s Justin Middleton (2:39.65) prevailed.
For the Warriors, Ryheim Lawes, Collin Gwilt, Alfasa Halley and Peter Gonzalez were fifth in the 4×400 relay (3:52.77), just ahead of C-NS (3:53.76) in sixth place as Liverpool’s Alex Christensen took seventh in the 600-meter run. Mark Vanmarter was sixth (19’5”) for the Warriors in the long jump.
