Liverpool Police Office David Sturtz has received the Onondaga County Traffic Safety Advisory Board Overall Performance Award for his traffic enforcement efforts in the village last year.
Sturtz accepted the award at the safety board’s Jan. 9 luncheon in Syracuse.
At the awards ceremony the LPD was presented with a 2012 AAA Platinum Award. The Platinum awards are the highest honor given to communities that demonstrate statistically measurable effectiveness in addressing local traffic safety issues.
“We have participated in this program since 1999,” said Liverpool Police Chief Don Morris, who accepted the AAA award. “We have received Gold and Platinum throughout the years.”
Other communities from around the state which earned Platinum awards for traffic safety were Brockport, Camillus, Fulton, Manlius, New York City, Old Westbury, Tuckahoe and White Plains.
Morris had served as Liverpool’s chief from 1999 to 2007 before he becoming chief of the East Syracuse Police Department. On Aug. 31, 2012, he returned to Liverpool after being hired here part-time to replace outgoing Chief Bill Becker. He continues to work as East Syracuse’s full-time chief.
Last week East Syracuse Police Department was awarded a 2012 Gold Award by the traffic safety advisory board.
“We have too many people that get injured and killed on our highways across the state,” said Baldwinsville Fire Department Chief Michael Lefancheck. “The whole goal of the traffic safety advisory board is to hopefully reduce that number in Onondaga County and these are the people who really make that happen.”
The Baldwinsville Police Department was awarded a 2012 Gold Award.
