Cicero Supervisor Jim Corl’s name is on the short list of candidates being considered for an appointment to the Onondaga County Legislature.
With Third District County Legislator Bill Meyer leaving for a county appointment, the seat will be left open for a replacement to be decided by County Executive Joanie Mahoney. Mahoney appointed Meyer as assistant director of the Veterans Service Agency last week in a shakeup that also left the ninth district seat open; Legislator Mark Stanczyk will be the new deputy commissioner of community services. She also appointed her campaign manager, Ben Dublin, as her chief of staff and communications director Marty Skanen as deputy commissioner of parks and recreation.
Stanczyk, a Democrat from Syracuse, will receive a salary of $82,135. Meyer, a Republican from Cicero, will be paid $62,755. Dublin’s position pays $90,629, while Skahen’s pays $85,216.
Mahoney, a Republican, said she will make appointments in the coming weeks to fill the Legislature vacancies created by the departure of Stanczyk and Meyer.
Corl, an attorney from Cicero, has confirmed that he is one of the candidates under consideration for the post.
“The county executive is coming to address the Cicero GOP committee this week to seek the committee’s input on a replacement for Legislator Meyer,” he said. “I am one of the individuals whose name has been put forward for consideration. I am honored to be considered for this position and will likely meet with County Executive Mahoney after her visit to discuss the possibility of such appointment. Right now, my primary focus is ensuring that the Town of Cicero government is running smoothly.”
County legislators are paid $26,575. Corl currently makes $44,053 as supervisor.
Meyer, who runs an insurance company in Cicero, joined the legislature in 1990. Prior to that, he served on the Cicero Town Board.
Corl was elected supervisor in 2011. If he leaves for the county seat, he will be replaced by Deputy Supervisor Jessica Zambrano and the board will appoint a new town councilor.
