Following a light December of meet activity and a holiday break, it was time for the West Genesee boys swim team to move into the busy portion of its 2012-13 schedule.
Doing so, the Wildcats hosted Cicero-North Syracuse last Thursday night and improved to 2-1 on the season, defeating the Northstars 94-81.
Matt O’Donnell helped get WG moving in the 200 medley relay, where he teamed with Joe Amedro, Jake Mullett and Sean Hagadorn for a first-place time of one minute, 49.34 seconds.
Later in the meet, O’Donnell would swim the 100 butterfly in 55.74 seconds, easily dispatching of C-NS’s Ben Mozo (58.74 seconds), and in the 100 backstroke O’Donnell beat the field with a time of 1:00.53.
Whiting also had a big role in this meet, going from a victory in the 50 freestyle in 23.96 seconds to a first-place time of 5:37.25 in the 500 freestyle. He also joined Mullett, Collin Zapisek and Ken Brill in a close 200 freestyle relay, where WG was second in 1:36.90, inches behind C-NS, who won in 1:36.43.
Zapisek gained an impressive individual title when he tore through the 100 freestyle in 50.34 seconds, beating another top Northstars swimmer, Ricky Blackburn (52.04 seconds), while Mullett was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.40. D.J. Coomber accumulated 177.25 points in diving.
This mostly served as a warm-up for a much bigger meet on Friday night, when WG hosts Auburn, who at 6-0 sits atop the CNY Counties League standings.
