Even a small matter like the holiday break could not keep the Cazenovia girls track and field team from another dominant effort.
The Lakers roared to first place in the Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association’s second meet of the season. Friday’s Partner Relays at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House.
This time around, Cazenovia earned 115 points, close to double the total of second-place New Hartford, who needed 69 points for second place.
Amid a two-athlete per-event format (there were no track relays, like the 4×200 or 4×400), the Lakers again dominated in the sprints.
Ashley Winn went 1-2 with Clare Costello in both the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash. In the 55, Winn had 7.50 seconds, with Costello crossing the line in 7.85 seconds.
In the 200, Winn won in 27.12 seconds and Costell (27.99) again slid into the runner-up spot. Just to cap it off, Winn also took the 300-meter dash in 44.01 seconds, this time teaming with Sarah Willard as they beat New Hartford 1:29.99 to the Spartans’ 1:31.66.
Grace Milmoe took first in the 600-meter run in 3:23.55, edging out teammate Margaret Wolsey (3:24.46) in yet another sweep of the top two positions. Jeannette Cudney and Wolsey went to the top in the 1,500-meter run in a total of 10:46.25, nearly half a minute ahead of New Hartford (11:15.98), and Cudney returned in the 3,000-meter run, helping Adrien Owens to a winning time of 24:04.21.
Willard and Samantha Gates ruled in the 600-meter run, finishing in a combined 3:50.36 as Gates finished second (1:51.31) and Willard third among individuals, just as Cudney and Wolsey did in the 1,500. Owens and Kelsey Henderson stepped up to finish a close second (21.40 seconds) to Oneida (21.35 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles.
In field events, Ashley Kent and Liz Pittman were victorious in the triple jump, going 59 feet 10 inches between them, beating New Hartford (58’11”) by nearly a foot. Tori Fischer and Brittney Devendorf teamed to clear 8′ 9″ for third place in the high jump, Fischer returning to help Pittman get third place (13′ 4″) in the pole vault.
Pittman was second in the individual long jump with 14′ 7 1/4″, teaming with Henderson for fourth place overall. Hannah Dain and Kortney Burdin were third in the shot put with combined throws of 50’11” as Dain and Maggie Namy took fourth in the weight throw.
Over in the MVITA boys meet, Cazenovia gained 26 points for fifth place, far away from the duel at the top as Clinton (111 points) held off Rome Free Academy (93 points) for the top prize.
Cameron Braathen was second in the shot put, heaving it 42′ 8″, and he teamed with Reed Lucas to win that event with 76′ 7″, seven inches ahead of Clinton. Braathen and Ryan O’Herrion were third in the weight throw with 71′ 4″.
Casey Fenton and Brody Kellish rose to third in the triple jump, combining to leap 69′ 9 1/2″ between them. Chittenango, led by Lucas Rogers and Isaac Czarnecki (third and fifth, individually), earned second place in the 1,000 in 5:58.82, ahead of Cazenovia in the fifth spot.
The Bears also got fourth place in the 600 as Rogers was fourth among individuals, just ahead of Cazenovia’s Sean Satchwell in fifth as his side got sixth place, with Chittenango adding a fifth in the 3,200-meter run and high jump. The Lakers were also sixth in the 200 and seventh in the 55 sprint.
