Once again, Cazenovia’s indoor track and field teams are competing against its neighbors as part of Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meets at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House.
During Thursday night’s MVITA opener, the girls Lakers immediately rocketed to first place in a 13-team field, picking up 92 points. Clinton took second place with 76 points.
In the relay format, individual events were scored with the top two finishers from each school, aside from three relay races.
Cazenovia ran away from the field in the 4×800 relay as Margaret Wolsey, Maureen Milmoe, Grace Milmoe and Colleen Stalder finished in 10 minutes, 46.29 seconds, more than 19 seconds ahead of runner-up South Lewis.
Yet the Lakers also mastered the sprint portion. Ashley Kent, Ashley Winn, Sarah Willard and Clare Costello combined to win a one-sided 4×200 relay, blazing to a time of 1:52.37 as New Hartford (2:04.31) was far back in second place.
Winn, on her own, took the 55-meter dash in 7.38 seconds, with Costello third (7.94) and a combined 15.32 seconds that easily beat Mount Markham (16.50 seconds) and the rest of the field.
Jeanette Cudney won the individual 1,500-meter run in 5:04.47, edging South Lewis star Victoria Campanian (5:05.12) as she, Meredith Shephard, Adrien Owens and Mia Walters were second as a quartet in 22:39.68.
Getting another victory, Liz Pittman and Kelsey Henderson combined to go 27 feet 3 ½ inches to edge Clinton (27’1”) in the long jump. Hannah Light-Olson and Maureen Milmoe followed up by winning the triple jump, going 58’5” between them as Pittman and Glenna Kelahan were third in the pole vault.
Tori Fischer and Brittney Devendorf cleared 9’4” between them for second place in the high jump. Hannah Dain and Sarah Haley were third in the shot put, with combined throws of 51’ 2 ¼”, and also got third (49 feet) in the weight throw. Kent and Owens were fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (21.35 seconds), with the Lakers also getting fourth in the 1,600 sprint medley relay in 4:57.77.
Cazenovia had 32 points to finish sixth in the boys MVITA meet, where Clinton, with 99 points, rolled to the top spot.
In the 4×200, Conner Polsin, Chad Warren, Alex Devine and Ryan O’Herien were third in 1:44.01. Warren and Polsin helped Tyler Dunkle and Sean Satchwell get fourth (4:09.05) in the 1,600 sprint medley.
Ryker Smith and Casey Fenton went 68’7” between them for third place in the triple jump, with Smith and Nick Tedesco moving to fifth in the high jump.
Cameron Braathen and Ryan Haley moved to third in the weight throw, going 67’ 9 ¾”, Braathen also teaming with Reed Lucas for fourth place in the shot put with total throws of 72’ 7 ¾”. Devine and Kevin Porter was fifth in the 55 hurdles, while Dunkle and Porter took fifth in the long jump.
