Less than two weeks after the Fayetteville-Manlius girls cross country team was winning another national title in Oregon, indoor track and field got underway.
Each of the area’s teams made it to Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena for the Jack Morse Relays, spread out over two days – Wednesday for the boys, Friday for the girls.
In the latter of these meets, Fayetteville-Manlius tied Liverpool for the girls team title, picking up 41 points. Jamesville-DeWitt made its way to sixth place with 32 points in a tightly-bunched field.
The Hornets twice won relay races. In the 4×400, Olivia Ryan, Meaghan Kincaid, Mikayla Ruthig and Marri Ryu finished in 4:22.20, with Skaneateles (4:23.98) in the runner-up spot. Ryan and Ryu returned in the 1,600 sprint medley to help Anna Perrotti and Hilary O’Neil get a time of 4:31.75, with Baldwinsville (4:31.88) just behind them.
F-M’s success spread to field events, too. Christina Ezidiegwu, teaming with Anna Castro, cleared 9 feet 8 inches between them and beat Clinton by two inches to take the high jump.
J-D emerged with a victory in the 4×200 relay, where Sierra Vasiliou, Taylor-Rae Danforth, Casey Keane and Ally Fox had a time of 1:53.40, well clear of Mexico (1:57 flat) and the rest of the field. Vasiliou also emerged with a victory in the individual long jump, going 15’ 10 ½”.
In the 4×800 relay, the Rams won again, this time with the quartet of Rachel Fairbanks, Laura Wengert, Samantha Clemons and Emilee Carpenter, whose time of 10:00.03 was more than 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Homer. F-M, in 10:47.37, finished sixth.
Anna Castro and Caitlin Ferro put F-M in third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 20.82 seconds, where J-D (21.27 seconds) was fifth. Ally Fox, third among individuals in the 55-meter dash, teamed with Patrece Martin for 15.99 seconds to finish fourth.
Also for the Red Rams, Tangela Hightower and Brooke DeRoberts were third in the shot put with combined throws of 57’ 1 ¼”.
East Syracuse-Minoa got all of its eight points in the distance medley relay, where Natalie Marra, Juliette Miller, Kate McGarrity and Gabby Pallotta finished in 13:15.74, second to Liverpool, who won in 13:08.26. F-M was fifth in 13:43.28.
It was J-D faring best among the boys teams last Wednesday night, getting 22 points for third place behind Cicero-North Syracuse and B’ville. ESM took sixth place with 20 points, F-M tied for seventh with 19 points and CBA gained 13 points.
ESM prevailed in the pole vault, where Corey Vollmer cleared 11 feet 3 inches for fourth place among individuals, teaming with Cadien Moynihan, who cleared 10 feet, as the combined 21’3” beat Tully (19’6”) for toph honors. J-D’s Zach Leibman cleared 11’6” and J-D was third as a result.
The Spartans also struck for a second-place finish in the 4×400 relay as Jesse Perrone, Joe Coogan, Nick Schug and Jake Barker finished in 3:52.39. The Spartans also took fifth (3:58.67) in the 1,600 sprint medley.
The Hornets’ lone win took place in the 55 hurdles, where Kyle Barber (third) and Kyle Harbour (sixth) combined for 18.11 seconds to edge C-NS (18.19 seconds) for the top spot.
J-D’s Jordan Franklin and Austin Phileo were fourth in the 55 hurdles, with Taumeras Howard and Jaquan Tearney gaining fourth in the 55 sprint with 14.18 seconds. Howard, Franklin, Liebman and Nate Sturgeon were third in the 4×200 relay in 1:38.14, where
CBA saw Connor Agnew and Clarke Cady team up for a second-place finish in the shot put relay with combined throws of 82 feet 1 inch.
The Brothers also got to fifth place in the 4×400 in 3:54.25, edging out F-M (3:55.03), who was sixth, and the exact same thing happened in the 4×800 as CBA was fifth in 11:45.58 and the Hornets (11:47.08) were a second and a half behind them. Zhengyue Zhu and Tanner Carter gave F-M a fifth-place finish in the long jump, and the Hornets added a sixth in the 4×200.
