Now it was time for the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team to hit the ice for the 2012-13 season.
Again, the Lakers are part of the Upstate New York League, a group of 13 teams grouped into three divisions, based on their sectional home. Skaneateles is part of the Section III league with Oswego, Ithaca and Alexandria Bay.
Points are awarded five different ways – three for a regulation win, zero for a regulation loss, one for an overtime loss, two for an overtime win and one for a tie.
For its opener Wednesday night, Skaneateles went north to face Alex Bay, and after a slow start took over in the game’s latter stages to beat the Purple Ghosts 4-1.
It took the entire first period for the Lakers to get settled, but Alex Bay didn’t exploit it as much as it could have, only leading 1-0 at intermission.
And once the Lakers got on the board in the second period, things started to change. Skaneateles grabbed a 2-1 lead before the period was done and, not resting on that, added two more tallies in the final period to pull clear.
Allison Weiss led the surge, scoring twice and adding an assist. Riley Donahue and Sophie Kush each had one goal, while Donahue joined Weiss, Sarah Sauda and Samantha Kawejsza in the assist column. In goal, Amanda Lupo stopped 13 of the 14 shots she faced.
Skaneateles, who plays home games at Austin Park’s Pavilion, hosts Massena next Friday before a weekend trip east to meet Albany Academy.
