A trip to last season’s Section III Class B-2 title game has only increased the Skaneateles girls basketball team’s appetite to succeed.
The Lakers’ 10-8 regular-season mark in 2011-12 included a 9-4 run to the OHSL Liberty American division regular-season championship. From there, Skaneateles advanced to the B-2 final before seeing a late lead slip away in a 64-51 defeat to Hannibal.
That has left head coach Jill Blasi’s players quite hungry to go further in 2012-13. Despite the graduation of Emily Call, Jackie Leslie and Shannon Byrne, the Lakers have a strong group back, led by Joanna Dobrovosky, Elizabeth Lane, Brittney Welch, Mary Buck, Erica Nye and Jo Anna Dean.
Skaneateles opened the season last Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and dominated from start to finish, more than doubling the Red Devils’ output in a 62-29 victory.
Lane led the way, scoring 14 points, with Welch close behind as she gained 13 points. Dobrovosky finished with 10 points as newcomer Ali Tomlinson poured in seven points and Nye got six points.
As the Lakers visit East Syracuse-Minoa Tuesday and go to Bishop Ludden on Thursday, the Skaneateles boys basketball team starts with three games in six days.
After hosting Westhill Wednesday night, the Lakers play at Syracuse Academy of Science on Friday. Then, Skaneateles plays Marcellus Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome, the first game of the third annual Hall of Fame Classic. A group of youth basketball players from Skaneateles will get a chance to scrimmage on the Dome court at halftime.
