In honor of John Lennon’s 72nd birthday, Kellish Hill Farm will veer from its usual country and folk sounds to present an authentic British Invasion rock concert for the first time ever with “Joey Molland: Badfinger, Beatles & Beyond – An Acoustic Autobiography.” Molland will take the stage at the Kellish Hill Music Barn following warm-up sets by two local combos starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Admission costs $20.
The 90-minute show showcasing original Badfinger guitarist and songwriter Joey Molland will highlight his work with that band, growing up in post-Beatlemania Liverpool, England, recording and performing with George Harrison and John Lennon in the early-1970s.
Kellish Hill Farm returns to its acoustic roots with a concert Tuesday by one of the world’s foremost finger-style guitarists and harp-guitarists, Muriel Anderson.
The first woman to ever win the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship in 1989, Anderson will perform here at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 (which happens to be the late John Lennon’s actual birth date).
An engaging performer hailing from Illinois, Anderson graduated from DePaul University in Chicago where she studied classical music. She has recorded with country legend Chet Atkins, performed with Les Paul and with the Chicago Symphony and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra.
Admission to Anderson’s Oct. 9 concert, which will also feature local songwriter Greg Hoover, cost $15; 682-1578.
In November 1969 Molland played guitar for Badfinger’s original members – Tom Evans, Mike Gibbins and Pete Hams – and was immediately hired.
Over the next five years the band recorded several albums for the Beatles’ own label, Apple Records. Badfinger toured extensively on the strength of Top Ten singles such as “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What” and “Day After Day,” but eventually became embroiled in the chaos of Apple Records’ dissolution.
Molland left Badfinger in late 1974 due to disagreements over management. During the early-1980s, two different versions of Badfinger existed, one fronted by Molland and another featuring Evans and Gibbins.
Now residing in Minnesota, Molland will be accompanied here by the Fab 570’s Paul Davie on piano, bass and rhythm guitar. Local British Invasion enthusiasts The Guise – Dale Randall and Adrian Gerard – and Chuck Schiele with Phil Smith will open the show with tributes to Lennon. After the performances, Molland will sign autographs and answer questions from the audience.
