Fresh from a July 14 performance at the Women’s Right to Rock Festival in Seneca Falls, Syracuse songwriter Melody Calley will be featured when The Quiet Storm descends on Lost Horizon at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 28. In keeping with the show’s theme, perhaps she’ll sing her song named “When it Rains.”
The Quiet Storm is a quadruple bill designed to showcase acoustic, original, indie rock local live music. Also appearing will be tunesmith Mike Roy, Rochester songwriter Goodbye Ronnie and the Flashing Astonishers, a Syracuse punk-rock combo which recently reunited.
While working a day-job in the health-services field, Calley previously fronted an independent rock band called The Best Dream that released an eight-song self-titled debut disc in 2009. The Best Dream entertained audiences at the Westcott Theater, Clinton Music and Arts Festival and Utica Music Festival.
Calley’s compositions such as “Take Nothing” and “Angry Girl” are folk-rock tunes with a hint of soul. She cites influences ranging from Radiohead to Ravi Shankar, from PJ Harvey to the Moody Blues.
“So much music, so little time,” Calley said, explaining her eclectic tastes.
While Melody herself plays acoustic guitar, she’ll be accompanied at the Lost Horizon by lead blues guitarist Joe Monkofsky who works as an advertising representative at Eagle Newspapers.
Doors open at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Lost Horizon, 5863 Thompson Road, on the far-eastern edge of the city of Syracuse, just south of the intersection with Erie Boulevard East. Admission costs $5; 446-1934.
After The Quiet Storm subsides, Calley’s upcoming performances include a 9 p.m. Aug. 3 date at Trace’s in Rome, N.Y., and an 8 p.m. show on Sept. 22 at Funk’N Waffles, in the alley off South Crouse Avenue, on the Syracuse University Hill.
