Last week I fielded a phone call from a Cazenovia resident and veteran of the Korean War, who was upset about the lack of coverage of the 2012 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony in the Cazenovia Republican.
I apologized for the oversight — as I had no intention of neglecting our nation’s and community’s veterans — and explained my reasoning to the reader, which I also wish to do within this column.
Every Monday morning, we send the latest issue of the newspaper to print; and every Wednesday morning, we receive the printed editions. Due to Memorial Day observances being held on a Monday (as they are every year) I had to send the issue to print that preceding Friday morning. This means the paper that was released Wednesday, May 30, could not have possibly had any Memorial Day coverage — and the earliest we could have run photos of the parade and ceremony would have been in the June 6 issue.
While featuring images of the procession would still have been appropriate and somewhat timely 10 days after Memorial Day, there were a lot of news items to print that week, and I subsequently ran out of space. The editorial appearing in the June 6 issue did touch upon Memorial Day observances, however no photos were included.
I want to make clear that not printing Memorial Day photos was not a slight against those who have selflessly served our country, but rather an error on my part.
I realized my oversight was due to the fact that many of the residents who read this paper, only read this paper — and do not access our website or social networking pages.
I admittedly did not think twice about holding off on featuring a photo layout in the print edition, because more than 100 photos had been available for view online immediately following the 2012 Memorial Day Parade, Ceremony and Lions Club Duck Race.
I had posted a photo album to the Cazenovia Republican Facebook page (facebook.com/cazrepublican) as soon as I returned home on Memorial Day, and marveled at the number of “likes” and comments many of the pictures received.
Though the album garnered lots of internet traffic, I realize it did not reach all Cazenovia residents.
I apologize for the error in judgment.
