At the June 4 Cazenovia Village Board meeting, trustees discussed moving toward establishing a set of specifications for future road construction and repair as well as the inclusion of additional benches and tables on the sidewalks of the Historic Cazenovia Business District.
There are currently 45 streets in the village of Cazenovia that can be classified by size and traffic volume as arterial, collector, minor and alleyways. Trustee Tim Mahoney said in the future, the classification of “alleyway” would most likely be eliminated, and all existing alleyways in the village would be rebuilt as minor streets, when repair is necessary.
As the idea of implementing design standards has just recently been introduced, Mahoney said the board invites residents to suggest improvements to streets, including grade, right of way, compaction, utilities and drainage facilities. “This is just the start. We welcome input,” he said. “My goal is to outline these standards and expectations for all future roadwork.”
After first hearing a request at last month’s meeting by representatives of the Historic Cazenovia Business District Committee, Mayor Kurt Wheeler added to the discussion of including additional tables and benches on Albany Street, in hopes of enhancing the streetscape to visitors and shoppers. Mahoney and Trustee Peggy Van Arnam were named to a subcommittee in charge of crafting guidelines for business owners to follow, if they wish to feature small tables outside their shops for pedestrians.
A resolution authorizing the use of up to $5,000 for the purchase of new benches was unanimously passed.
In other board news:
—Mayor Wheeler announced village Planning Board Chairman William Hall and Member Charles Macaulay, as well as zoning board of appeals Member Rob Connor would be not be reprising their roles. Wheeler thanked each of them for their service and invited interested village residents to volunteer for the boards.
—The Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce’s request for use of Lakeland Park grandstand for the 2012 Summer Concert Series was approved. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. every Thursday, with the exception of July 4, when musical performances will begin at 3 p.m.
—Dave Peterson, a representative of Cazenovia Cub Scout Pack 16, was authorized to use Lakeland Park on Sept. 15 and 16 for a camp out. Peterson estimates about 35 tents will be erected for scouts in grades 1 through 5 and their families.
—Due to low construction costs for the Carpenter’s Barn restoration project, contract change order No. 1 was unanimously approved. The extra funds will be reallocated for unexpected costs and new work to be done on the structure.
—Charles and Maureen Caprara’s request for a village easement to build a stone wall on village property outside their residence was tabled for next month’s meeting, which will be held on July 2.
