Just before April ended, Chittenango’s track and field teams got together and hosted its annual invitational meet, bringing together many of the area’s top athletes.
That included the Cazenovia girls team, who picked up 85 points, beating everyone in the 17-team field except Class AA power Fayetteville-Manlius, who used its dominance in distance running to accumulate 145 points for the title.
Going to the five-event pentathlon, Paige Biviano ripped through the field with 2,978 points, nearly 400 points ahead of second-place Haylie Virginia (Phoenix), who had 2,595 points.
Biviano she cleared 5 feet 1 inches in the high jump, went 17’ ¾” in the long jump and ran the 100 hurdles in a swift 16.6 seconds, nearly a full second faster than in the Skaneateles/Solvay meet three days earlier.
Ashley Winn and Jillian Vogl went 1-2 in the 200, as Winn prevailed in 26.07 seconds and Vogl (26.83 seconds) held on to the second spot. Winn also beat the field in the 100 in 12.73 seconds, with Vogl taking third place in 13.06 seconds.
Together, Winn, Vogl, Ashley Kent and Anna Schultz needed 52.10 seconds to whip Utica Proctor (52.95 seconds) and the rest of the field in the 4×100. Cazenovia also got second in the 4×800 as Caroline Marshall, Rae Tobey, Jeannette Cudney and Michelle Karker finished in 10:32.30.
On her own, Cudney rose to third place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:34.61, while Tobey (7:51.05) was fifth. In the girls mile, Marshall, with a clocking of 5:11.79, roared into third place.
Margaret Wolsey took third in the 800 in 2:34.06, while Kent got to fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.87 seconds) and Liz Pittman was sixth in the triple jump.
On the boys end at Chittenango, the Lakers picked up 14 points, most of them from Dylan Muller, who was third in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, and going 39’9” for third place in the triple jump. Cameron Braathen had a fifth-place discus throw of 120’1”.
For the host Bears, there were a few modest highlights. Jason Given ran to third place in the boys 400-meter dash in 51.84 seconds, not far from the winning 51.04 posted by Fayetteville-Manlius sprinter Austin Perez.
Given added a seventh in the 200-meter dash as he, Lucas Rogers, Jadin Nourse and Brandon Woodward posted a fifth-place time of 3:45.73 in the 4×400 relay.
Courtney Dyer was fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.07 seconds) and sixth in the girls 400-meter dash in 1:04.35. Brianna Boyer, Kendall McGee, Brooke Busa and Caity Foster got to sixth in the 4×800 relay in a time of 11:06.97.
F-M won both sides of the team competition. In the boys meet, the Hornets’ Nick Ryan supplied a highlight when he tore through the boys mile in a time of 4:14.46.
