In barely the span of a week, the Cazenovia boys golf team had played – and thrived – in wildly varying conditions.
After playing in summer-like warmth during a win at Skaneateles on April 20, the Lakers had to deal with chilly temperatures, wind and rain at Pine Grove for last Tuesday’s match at Solvay.
It didn’t matter, though, as the Lakers dusted off the Bearcats 191-213. Nick Christakos, with a nine-hole total of 36, led another deep and balanced scoring effort.
Gus Whitaker shot a 37, one shot behind Christakos, while Matt Schaffner posted a 38. Brian Demo chimed in with a 39 and Trevor Gatzke finished with a 41.
A day later, the Lakers absorbed its first defeat of the season, falling to Westhill 195-202 at Camillus Country Club.
Schaffner had a 39, with Gatzke, Christakos and Schaffner each posting 40. However, three Warrior golfers broke 40, as Gus Gosson had a 36, with Ryan Conroy (38) and Nate Marshall (39) close behind.
Moving to girls action, Cazenovia moved to 3-1 on the season, holding off Chittenango 221-231 on Wednesday at Woodcrest.
The Lakers’ Maggie Carpenter and the Bears’ Meg Arnold shared the low individual total of 49, but Carpenter had better scores behind her. Danielle Mazec gave Cazenovia a 55, with Kelsi Fredericks adding a 56. Only one other Chittenango player, Megan Gearity (54), broke 60.
