Only the efforts of the rivals from up Route 31 kept the Baldwinsville boys track and field team from claiming the top honors as it hosted Saturday’s John Arcaro Relays.
Fighting cold, wet conditions, the Bees picked up 96 points, topping everyone in the 12-team field except Cicero-North Syracuse, who earned first place with 112 points.
Alec Peinkofer, Josh Perez, Andy Fleming and Matt Pond were victorious in the mile relay, the quartet posting a time of 19 minutes, 25.62 seconds as C-NS (19:44.60) was second, nearly 19 seconds behind.
The Bees also won the 4×800 relay, where Pond, Peinkofer and Fleming joined Steve Keegan for a time of 8:45 flat, more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Holland Patent.
Not stopping there, Fleming and Pond got a third relay title in the 4×400, helped by Nate Wicks and Dan Walker as B’ville, in 3:33.43, again won, with HP (3:38.68) trailing by more than five seconds. Wicks, joined by Walker, Rickey Sparks and Shay Sargeant, tore through the 4×200 relay in 1:34.76, with Corcoran (1:41.79) and the field far behind.
Perez, with Chris Twichell, gained second place in the 3,000 steeplechase, their two times adding up to 21:57.4, with Mexico (21:43.0) in the top spot.
Shawn Calnan gave a superb effort in the five-event pentathlon and finished second, his 2,470 points behind Indian River’s Will Moran, who got 2,601 points. Calnan won both the long jump and shot put during the pentathlon.
Pat McNamara and Tom Ancillotti were second in the shot put, their throws adding up to 191’4” as Rome Free Academy (208’9”) went to the front. Sean Marr and James Wafful earned second place in the triple jump, going 67’9” as Skaneateles (79’6”) prevailed.
Jack Martin, Justin Dalaba, Greg Jaquint and Antonio Martinez ran the distance medley relay in 11:51.78, claiming fifth place. Brian Mahar, James Eustice, Rickey Sparks and Bennan LaQue took fifth (2:13.50) in the 1,000 sprint medley.
Kirk Anderson and Karl Smiley were fifth in the weight throw, with Ancillotti joining Richard Buck as they were fifth in the long jump. Sean Maar and Kurt Anderson ran to fifth in the 400 hurdles. Harrison Warner, by clearing 5’4”, got fifth in the high jump all by himself. Chad McArdell and Greg Lefancheck were sixth in the 110 hurdles.
A day earlier, B’ville’s girls went to the Tully Invitational, where Mackenzie Ross provided a big highlight by winning the 800-meter run, her time of 2:25.05 nearly two seconds ahead of C-NS’s Katie Laris, who was second in 2:26.90.
Emily Soeder also went to the top, in the high jump, the only competitor to clear 5 feet 3 inches, one inch better than Fulton’s Anna McKay.
Gabby Jordan took second place in the 100-meter dash final, her 13.09 seconds only topped by Cazenovia’s Ashley Winn, who won in 12.77 seconds. Jordan also was seventh in the 200, where teammate Gina Carnovale (27.41 seconds) was fifth. But Carnovale saved her best work for the 400-meter dash, where in 59.89 seconds she was runner-up to South Jefferson’s Skylar Pastor, who won in 57.98 seconds.
Ross teamed with Morgan Marshall, Jada Sargeant and Marissa Lathrop for third place in the 4×400 relay in 4:24.61. Mia Bolton, Emily Thompson, Chandra Hewitt and Nicole Piontkowski needed 10:29.02 to take third in the 4×800, with the Bees winning the novice 4×800 in 11:02.26.
Annie Peterson earned fifth place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:11.62, while also helping Thompson, Quaneisha Ivey and Julia Johnson go 13:59.45 for fifth place in the distance medley relay. Jordan was fifth and Carnovale sixth in the long jump, with Carlie McNamara eighth in the shot put.
