It’s been a long and financially difficult road, but the Jamesville-DeWitt School District has reinstated several modified sports teams that were cut in the 2011-12 budget.
In total, nine coaches were re-hired, while the money is also back to pay for travel and officiating. Fitness Forum donated $38,000 to keep the athletic trainer, the ultra popular Dave Schultz, in place, which was a hot topic at recent debates about the budget.
Save JD Sports has done a lot recently to try and keep programs and coaches afloat, however, it wasn’t able to get four varsity and junior varsity coaches reinstated. In turn, Save JD will donate $17,480 to reinstate assistant varsity coaches for boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, track and field and JV cheerleading.
Prior to the start of this spring season, Save JD Sports raised $48,000 to help reinstate the modified programs and other varsity positions.
Save JD Sports says it will continue to stay in close communication with the Board of Education and district administrators in the hopes of restoring all funds to the budget necessary for scholastic sports to continue at the modified, junior varsity and varsity levels. In a release, Save JD Sports says sports “is critical to the development of the children.”
