Community members are coming together to support a Camillus man who has been battling leukemia since October.
Tom Bieber was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He began extensive chemotheraphy, but eventually doctors learned he would need a bone marrow transplant. His brother, Michael, was a match and the transplant was done in Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital.
“He’s now home recovering from that, but he still needs chemo,” said benefit organizer Sandy Elsey.
Community members are rallying around him and his family, planning a benefit for the end of the month. The benefit, Elsey said, is to help the family out financially as Bieber continues regular trips to Rochester for treatment and while he is out of work. He lives in Camillus with his wife and two daughters, ages 12 and 10.
“We wanted to make sure financially that they would be able to pay their bills and help them out,” Elsey said.
The benefit will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Camillus Elks Lodge on Newport Road. A silent auction and raffles will be available, as well as music by the Horn Dogs.
Tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. Children 10 and under are free.
