Establishing herself as the preeminent sprinter in local girls indoor track, Cazenovia junior Ashley Winn twice beat a field of large-school opponents during Wednesday night’s Section III state qualifier at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
In the 55-meter dash, Winn posted the fastest qualifying time of 7.25 seconds. Then, in the finals, she slowed a bit, to 7.28 seconds, but still got past Nottingham’s Ke’Arra Allen (7.53 seconds) and the rest of the field.
Later, in the 300-meter dash, Winn steadily pulled away from the field and won again, her time of 41.04 seconds nearly half a second better than Baldwinsville’s Gina Carnovale, who was second in 41.53 seconds. Jillian Vogl took fourth place in 42.44 seconds.
Working together, Winn and Vogl joined Jessie Matt and Ashley Kent as the Lakers finished second in the 4×200 relay in 1:49.28, behind only Liverpool, who won in 1:47.36.
Cazenovia also had the fastest small-school time in the 4×800 relay, where Caroline Marshall, Megan Stanford, Margaret Wolsey and Jeannette Cudney finished in 10:00.09, second overall behind Fayetteville-Manlius (9:10.12).
Marshall, on her own, took third in the 1,000-meter run in 3:02.41, with Cudney going to the 3,000-meter run and getting eighth place in 11:09.79, just ahead of teammate Rae Tobey (11:10.76) in ninth place.
Paige Biviano battled Cicero-North Syracuse’s Katie Osborne in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles, finishing second in 8.96 seconds as Osborne prevailed in 8.84 seconds. Biviano added a fifth in the long jump, going 16 feet 7 ½ inches, and cleared 5 feet 2 inches for fifth place in the high jump.
In the boys state qualifier, Dylan Muller cleared 13 feet in the pole vault, the same as C-NS star Mike Hyde as they tied for second behind Old Forge’s Connor Rockhill, who cleared 13 feet 6 inches. Chittenango’s Jason Given was fifth in the 600-meter run in 1:27.81.
Now Winn and her fellow Lakers prepare to go to Cornell University’s Barton Hall for this Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet, which starts at 9 a.m.
