Given the gap of nearly three weeks between league and sectional championships, it only figured that the Section III Select Meet took place in between those big events.
When they gathered Tuesday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, Fayetteville-Manlius again earned a fair share of victories on the boys and girls sides in distance races and sprints.
Heather Martin was the main star for F-M. She won the 600-meter run in a time of 1:38.13, rose to fourth in the long jump with 15 feet 2 inches and also was fourth (43.11 seconds) in the 300-meter dash.
Annika Avery won the 1,500-meter run in a swift time of 4:51.35, where Jamesville-DeWitt’s Rachel Fairbanks (5:01.31) was third. In the 1,000-meter run, Katie Sischo won in 2:56.76, the only time under the three-minute mark.
Hannah Smith, Mary Barger, Olivia Ryan and Jillian Fanning needed 9:34.81 to win the 4×800 relay, nearly 40 seconds better than Cazenovia, while Fairbanks, Laura Wengert, Samantha Clemons and Emilee Carpenter gave J-D third place in 10:22.02.
J-D’s quartet of Liz Pieri, Katy Pieri, Danielle Doss and Ally Fox were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:13.64, just behind Baldwinsville (4:13.07) and ahead of F-M in fifth place. In the 4×200, Fox, Doss, Maggie Fuller and Liz Pieri were third (1:52.93), inches ahead of F-M (1:53.01) in fourth.
Doss tied for the top pole vault clearance of 8 feet 6 inches with Kaela Fiutak (Skaneateles), but Fiutak had fewer misses, so she prevailed. Fox took fourth in the 55-meter dash in 7.67 seconds.
Patrece Martin, in the triple jump, went 34 feet 7 inches to finish second, where ESM’s Amanda Wall was sixth. Maggie Fuller cleared 5 feet 1 inch for third place in the high jump and got sixth in the long jump, and Victoria Nandal was fifth in the shot put and Noelle Novakowski got sixth in the 55-meter hurdles, just ahead of F-M’s Jessica Puro in seventh.
East Syracuse-Minoa was 10th in the 4×800. Gabby Pallotta, who ran a leg in that event, got to sixth in the 3,000-meter run as F-M’s Emily McGurrin (10:54.02) was fourth and Carpenter was eighth. The Spartans’ Juliette Miller took eighth in the 1,000.
Moving to the boys Select Meet, F-M’s Nick Ryan beat CBA’s Brendan Smith, 9:18.87 to 9:21.36, as they went 1-2 in the 3,200-meter run.
Langston Lightcap put himself in front of the field in the 600 in 1:25.36, more than three seconds ahead of the field, while Bryce Millar was fourth in the mile in 4:32.97. Austin Perez needed 36.36 seconds to win the 300 sprint ahead of CBA’s Kevin Frasier (37.81 seconds) in the runner-up spot.
Ben Thomas had to settle for second in the 1,000, 2:37.88 to Ryan Manahan (Marcellus), who won in 2:37.57.
On J-D’s side, Amani Jackson won the 55-meter dash, edging Rome Free Academy’s Josh Reed, 6.69 seconds to Reed’s 6.70. Will Sterriker got to second in the 55 hurdles in 8.08 seconds, only behind Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Jack Honis, who won in 7.95 seconds.
Sterriker, Nate Sturgeon, Zach Liebmann and Navale Taylor were second in the 4×200 relay, just behind Liverpool, 3:36.35 to the Warriors’ 3:35.97. F-M was sixth in 3:42.93. Liebmann, on his own, was fourth in the pole vault (11 feet 6 inches) and took eighth in the 300. CBA was sixth in the 4×200 (1:40.34), with J-D (1:40.86) in seventh.
