With one field of opponents fully conquered, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team turned its attention to a larger crowd – and beat them, too.
Individual titles from Paige Biviano, Ashley Winn, Jillian Vogl and Molly Woodworth pushed the Lakers to the team title at Monday’s Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational at Onondaga Community College’s brand-new SRC Arena.
To some degree, the Lakers caught a break. Originally, the Grieve meet was set for Jan. 13, just three days after the Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association championships at Colgate, but snow forced a three-day postponement.
Thus, Cazenovia was rested, and ready to prove itself against the powerful teams of the CNY Counties League and Onondaga High School League in the new OCC arena that only opened a month ago and is home base for that league’s indoor track squads.
Amassing 54 points, the Lakers beat them all, edging Fayetteville-Manlius (51 points) and Jamesville-DeWitt (46 points) for the victory.
Individuals had to step up – and did, starting with Biviano, who roared to first place in the 55-meter hurdles, edging Cicero-North Syracuse’s Katie Osborne with a time of 8.96 seconds to Osborne’s nine seconds flat.
Moving to the 55-meter dash, Winn took her turn and, in 7.40 seconds, got past Fowler’s Kamisha Tucker (7.56 seconds) and the rest of the field. In the 300-meter dash, Vogl completed a sprint sweep as, in a time of 42.69 seconds, she beat F-M’s Marri Ryu (43.07 seconds) for the top spot.
One more title came in the shot put, where Woodworth proved the strongest. Her throw of 30 feet 10 ½ inches was nearly a foot better than Central Square’s Katryna Elliott (30 feet), and no one else had a 30-foot toss.
Biviano nearly won a second time, in the high jump, but cleared 5 feet 2 inches with more misses than J-D’s Maggie Fuller, so she settled for second. More points came in the sprint medley, where Caroline Marshall and Ashley Kent joined Winn and Vogl to take fourth place in 4:23.39. Jeannette Cudney was fifth (5:08.90) in the 1,500-meter run.
Meanwhile, the Cazenovia boys team picked up eight points to tie for 16th place. Most of them came in the shot put, where Cameron Braathen’s throw of 42 feet 7 ¾ inches led to third place. Dylan Muller cleared 11 feet for fifth place in the pole vault.
