The concerns of residents have lead to a lowered speed limit on Kinderhook Hook Road, a state road, in the town of Manlius.
Residents brought their concerns about speed safety on Kinderhook Road to the Manlius Town Board in July, petitioning to lower the speed limit on the road from 55 mph to 45 mph between Route 290 and the county line.
Town Supervisor Ed Theobald drafted a letter to the NYS Department of Transportation, who determines state speed limits. The state initiated a traffic study in mid September.
“The speed limit change request goes into a study which looks into roadside development, number of lanes, intersections, road geometry, the curvature of the road, the hills of the road, sight distance, shoulder width and traffic levels,” said Gene Cilento, the DOT public information officer for the Syracuse region. “From that determination, it is a candidate for a 45 mph zone.”
The lowered speed limit was approved by the state. New speed limits go into effect with the completion of new speed limit signs, which were installed Tuesday.
