An inspired run by the Cazenovia girls tennis team through the Section III Class B tournament finally ended in the semifinal round.
The Lakers fell, 5-2, to top seed New Hartford last Monday afternoon in a match twice delayed by rain before things cleared up. The Spartans advanced to the sectional final against Christian Brothers Academy, who edged Jamesville-DeWitt 4-3 in the other semifinal Oct. 15 at Drumlins.
Both of Cazenovia’s points were earned in singles. Elizabeth Palmer worked her way past Claire Hotvedt 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, while Kelly Furlong, in third singles toppled Whitney Petralia by those exact same scores in the same order. Laura Gregg fell to Angie Liu 6-1, 6-0.
New Hartford won every doubles match, too. In a third-set tie-breaker, Claire Chanatry and Rebecca Marsch fell to Carisma Cherukuri and Emily Steates 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, while Olivia Bowser and Sally Langan saw an early lead get away in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Rachel Madden and Alex Romano.
The other doubles teams fought hard, too. Grace Gara and Taylor Mimms fell to Neesha Desai and Ooha Kambhampati 6-4, 6-3, while Edie Connor teamed with Sienna Lints had a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Emily Aquaviva and Madeline Locke.
