Though it certainly didn’t need any further validation of its strength, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team was determined to claim the top prize at its own Fall Swing Tournament on Saturday.
And the Bees did just that, beating 15 other school that gathered for the mid-season classic at Baker High School.
The 16 sides were divided into four pools that played six sets against each other. In Pool A, B’ville went 6-0, sweeping past West Genesee, Fulton and Queensbury. Three other sides – Burnt Hills and South Glens Falls from Section II, and Pittsford Sutherland from Section V – won their respective pools with 6-0 marks, too.
Eight teams moved on to the ‘Gold Division’ winner’s bracket quarterfinals, where B’ville dispatched of Thomas Edison (Section V) 25-10, 25-15, just as South Glens Falls took out Liverpool 25-18, 25-10. Also, Pittsford Sutherland took out Queensbury (Section II) 25-18, 25-12, and Burnt Hills had a 25-14, 25-10 sweep of Lancaster (Section VI).
Excitement picked up a bit in the semifinals, where Pittsford Sutherland lost the first set to Burnt Hills, but rallied for a 20-25, 25-20, 25-13 victory. B’ville, though, won its ninth and 10th straight sets, routing South Glens Falls 25-13, 25-12.
The championship match followed the pattern of the entire day. No matter what Pittsford Sutherland tried, the Bees proved too good on all fronts and, by a 25-16, 25-20 margin, earned the tournament title.
Elsewhere, Oswego beat Fulton 25-16, 25-11 to win the Silver division, while Horseheads (Section IV) got past Cicero-North Syracuse 25-16, 25-18 in the Bronze division final. Marcellus, LaFayette and City Honors (Section VI) also took part in the tournament.
