Recording its biggest win of the season to date, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls volleyball team outlasted Cicero-North Syracuse in five sets Tuesday night, handing the Northstars its first defeat of the season.
At first, it looked like CNS, who entered the match at 10-0, would breeze here, too, as it took out the Hornets 25-15 in the opening set.
However, in the second set F-M prevailed, 25-21, and in a tense third set the Hornets pulled it out, 25-23, to move out in front. That proved important when, in the fourth set, the Northstars won, 25-19, to send the match to the limit.
F-M had the last surge, though, winning the final set by that same 25-19 margin. In nearly every aspect, Lauren Carey was involved, the Hornets setter recording 38 assists, to go with nine digs, six aces and two kills. Ivanka Temnycky managed 18 kills and nine digs, leading the Hornets’ front line.
Shannon DaRin offered sensational defense with 21 digs, while Alexis Rios backed up her 20 digs with six kills. Caroline Gadsden had five kills as Jessica Palmeiro and Carmen Sorrentino earned four kills apiece. Meghan Boshart had six digs.
CNS, in defeat, saw Lindsey Silfer pick up 12 assists, 10 kills, four aces and five blocks. Adrianna Patzer had nine blocks and five kills as Amy Van Hoven got 17 assists and four kills. Jenna Tartaro added eight kills.
In boys action, F-M beat Central Square 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 on Wednesday night. Jason Zipprich, earned 11 kills, while Jordan Covel had eight kills, Dan Silverman had six kills and Kevin Sager got four kills. Aravinth Mathuranayagam had 31 assists.
The Hornets had back-to-back weekend victories, starting Friday with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-19 sweep of the combined Syracuse city entry. Mathuranayagam, with his 25 assists, fed it to Louis Avellino, who finished with 10 kills. Sager and Silverman each posted five kills.
A long match with Horseheads followed on Saturday. F-M won the first set 25-20, lost the next two sets 25-17 and 25-22, but pulled off a 25-23 win in the fourth set and went beyond the limit to claim the final set 27-25.
Zipprich returned to action and amassed 17 kills, helped by Silverman, who got 13 kills, and Sager, who put up nine kills. Jordan Covel stepped up for seven kills, with Avellino (four kills, three digs) and Julian Lavelle (eigth digs) helping out as Mathuranayagam got a season-best
