For a long time, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team measured itself against Marcellus. And with the exception of the Lakers’ classic five-set win over the Mustangs in the 2006 Section III Class B final, the other side always loomed bigger.
Such proved the case again in the first fall meeting between the two programs last Tuesday night, where Marcellus pulled through in three tough sets.
The Mustangs moved its program from the winter this year, one season after Cazenovia had done the same, restoring the rivalry the two shared when together in the OHSL Liberty division.
Together, they played a classic opening set here. Both sides had multiple chances to pull in front, but finally Marcellus prevailed, 30-28. And that seemed to discourage the Lakers for, in the next two sets, the Mustangs pulled away, winning by margins of 25-20 and 25-13.
Amber Robinson still had a strong effort, with 10 assists, seven kills and 13 digs. Madison Gabor and Sam Prossner both finished with six kills, while Dominique Lyons earned nine digs and Gabor eight digs.
Amara Kattrein had four assists, three kills and three digs. Staci Valik added five digs and three assists and Dana Kiselica picked up five digs. Devon Landers (15 kills), Nicole Fletcher (10 kills, seven blocks) and Jessica Cost (29 assists) led the Mustangs’ efforts.
