Gear up for the Syracuse International Film Festival with these two silver-screen picks for this weekend.
‘This Gun for Hire’
The 1942 film-noir classic that catapulted Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake to stardom, “This Gun for Hire,” will be screened by the Syracuse Cinephile Society at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Spaghetti Warehouse.
Directed by Frank Tuttle, the movie focuses on Lake, portraying the girlfriend of a detective who gets involved with a professional killer (Ladd) who is double-crossed by his employer (Laird Cregar). A young Yvonne DeCarlo plays a nightclub dancer.
The Cinephile Society’s fall film series continues Oct. 17 with “Dodsworth” (1936) starring Walter Huston, Ruth Chatterton and Mary Astor; syracusecinephile.com/node/17.

‘Presure Cooker’ at Red House
Red House Arts Center continues its “Unsung Heroes” documentary film series with a screening of the 2009 film “Pressure Cooker.”
The award-winning film focuses on Philadelphia public high school culinary arts teacher Mrs. Stephenson, known for her disarmingly blunt, boot-camp style and reputation for helping students gain entrance into the top culinary schools in the country.
The family-friendly film screens at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Red House Arts Center, 201 S. West St. Cost is $8, $5 for members; theredhouse.org.
