With determination and perseverance, the Skaneateles girls tennis team moved into the win column for the first time in 2011 last Monday afternoon, going to Westhill and beating the Warriors by a 4-3 margin.
Makenzi Herbst and Katelyn Ellison both lost their singles matches in straight sets to, respectively, Katie Ferrara and Eileen Fleming. However, Alana Davis earned a crucial point in third singles when she came from behind to beat Phoebe Langdon 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In third doubles, the Lakers pulled off another rally, as Olivia Gage and Angela Krause dropped the first set to Kathleen Dillon and Anna Pauldino, but roared back to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Avery Bird and Julia Hern could not quite sweep Connor Catone and Dana Elleman, but still prevailed 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
And in a second doubles match decided by a third-set tie-breaker, Elizabeth Belinski and Emily Call held off Adrianna Carello and Bridget Sherlock 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. In the other doubles match, Katharina Kulik and Kathryn Magee lost to Casey Hagen and Selina Scutari 7-5, 6-1.
