Town of Camillus residents will head to the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 20, to vote whether or not to abolish the town’s receiver of taxes office.
The referendum will be held from noon to 8 p.m. at the Camillus Municipal Building, 4600 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Absentee ballots will be available until 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the town clerk’s office in the municipal building. For more information, call 488-1234.
Town Supervisor Mary Ann Coogan said eliminating the office was something that the board has looked into for a number of years.
About a month after Receiver of Taxes Patricia Fletcher passed on May 21, the board unanimously agreed to hold a public hearing to find out how the community felt about not filling the vacancy and consolidating services.
“Other towns have done the same with significant savings,” Coogan said.
Onondaga County Comptroller Robert Antonacci studied the possibility of eliminating the position and having the town clerk assume extra duties. The study was performed through a grant through the Comptroller’s office at no cost. The data collected showed that taxpayers could save $50,000 in salary and benefits by eliminating the position.
“It will be up to the people of the town to decide,” Coogan said.
