Lauren Petty can now exit the high school girls golf stage having accomplished everything she wanted.
First, Petty broke through and won a Section III championship at Foxfire on May 24. Then she took it higher during last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament at SUNY-Delhi by winning that event, too.
With experience on the Delhi course from playing there (and tying for third place) in 2010, Petty played through tough opening-round conditions Saturday for a 75. This put her in second place, one shot behind Garden City’s Sam Sessa.
By Sunday, the weather improved, and in a tense final round Sessa improved to a 72. But Petty topped her, and everyone else, when she shot a 70, setting a women’s course record at Delhi, and with her 145 total beat Sessa by a single shot.
Also, Petty was part of a Section III team that took fourth place in an eight-team field with a cumulative score of 1,169. Fayetteville-Manlius’ Alex Seabury tied for fifth at 155, with CBA’s Mary Fletcher (160) and Auburn’s Larissa Carter (161) also managing top-20 finishes.
