Following yet another season of regular-season domination, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team continued that work in the Section III Class A tournament, played at Syracuse University’s SkyTop Courts, by winning all three singles divisions.
Each of the Hornets’ singles players reached the final round with straight-set wins. Nick Westergaard topped Justin Parow (Central Square) 6-2, 6-0, while Wilbert Geng handled Austin DeMott (Oswego) 6-1, 6-0 and Mike Mintskovsky, in three sets, got past Mitchell Lalik (Fulton) 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.
Once in the finals on Tuesday afternoon, nothing changed. Westergaard beat West Genesee’s Brett Boleslav 6-2, 6-1, while Geng got past another Wildcat, Garrett Boleslav, 7-6, 6-2. Mintskovsky met Liverpool’s Jason Lam and needed a second-set tie-breaker, but prevailed 6-1, 7-6.
East Syracuse-Minoa’s team of Brandon and Parker Stone rose up to win the first doubles title. They beat Dan and James Miron 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals, and then went to the title match a day later and earned a 6-1, 7-6 win over Baldwinsville’s tandem of Tom Hamm and Dan Kot.
F-M, in second doubles, saw Alex Martin and Sam Badalian got to the title match, beating Tyler Arnold and Erik Breault (West Genesee) 6-2, 6-0, but losing in the final to the B’ville team of Alec Funicello and Grady Schmidt 6-3, 7-6.
In the Class B tournament at Utica Parkway courts, Christian Brothers Academy went for its own singles sweep – and got it.
Matt Nardella rose to the championship in first singles with a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Jamesville-DeWitt’s Abraham Davis, while Colin Nardella did the same thing in second singles, winning the final over Cazenovia’s Nick Christakos 6-1, 6-0. Alex Ojugbeli, who got a 6-1, 6-0 semifinal win over J-D’s Reed Tso, followed up with a 6-2, 6-2 sweep of Cazenovia’s Sam Concilla in the title match.
On J-D’s side, Amir Nazem and Steve Procopio, in second doubles, beat CBA’s Ash Kamani and Dan Mantooth 6-2, 7-6 to reach the finals and would take the title by prevailing over Pat Marris and Noah Zinsmeister (Cazenovia) 7-5, 6-4. Jack Alexander lost in the second singles semifinals and ended up in fourth place.
