Ricky Alfreds, who established himself as one of the best running backs in the history of the Marcellus football program, is on his way to St. John Fisher College near Rochester.
Alfreds made his decision late in April, choosing Fisher, an NCAA Division III school in Pittsford, over the likes of Alfred University, Ithaca College and the University of Rochester.
It is expected that Alfreds, who suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder while playing lacrosse early this season, will redshirt next fall at Fisher, giving him time to fully recover before getting back on the field for both lacrosse and football.
After 35 carries as a freshman, Alfreds took over as the primary Marcellus back in 2008, his sophomore year, where he gained 868 yards, an average of seven yards per carry, and scored 10 touchdowns. A year later, Alfreds improved to 1,100 yards and 7.5 yards per carry with nine TDs as the Mustangs reached the sectional finals at the Carrier Dome before falling to Westhill.
As a senior, Alfreds just missed the 1,000-yard mark, “settling” for 986 in the Mustangs’ return to the sectional semifinals as he finished with six touchdowns and averaged 6.3 yards a carry. So, for his career, Alfreds had 3,119 yards on the ground, plus 40 pass receptions for 529 yards.
St. John Fisher comes off a 2010 season where it started 7-0, lost two of its last three regular-season games but rebounded to beat RPI 56-13 in the ECAC Division III Northwest Championship Bowl.
