Whether it was simple or complicated, the fact remained clear – Canastota and Hamilton still have chances to earn Section III girls volleyball championships. As the no. 2 seed in Class B, the undefeated Raiders made quick work of Thursday night’s quarterfinal, sweeping no. 7 seed Mount Markham in three games. Meanwhile, in the Class D opening round, Hamilton, the no. 4 seed, fell behind no. 5 seed Owen D. Young, but rallied with a dominant performance in the last two games to prevail in five. Canastota, on its home court, jumped all over Mount Markham, a familiar opponent from the Center State Conference. The Raiders won the opening game 25-9, then had to work a bit more in the second game to claim it 25-19 before clinching the victory 25-12 in a one-sided third game. Beginning her last post-season go-round with the Raiders, Jessica Patterelli, Section III’s all-time assist leader, put up 17 assists, plus eight digs and five kills. Katelyn Rounds had seven aces, to go with seven digs and four kills. On a well-balanced front line, Melissa Krak led with six kills and four digs, with Stephanie Thornton and Tracy O’Hern each matching Patterelli with five kills. Hamilton, meanwhile, won a close opening game with Owen D. Young 26-24, which allowed it to absorb defeats of 25-21 and 25-20 in the next two games. At just the right time, though, the Emerald Knights stepped up its level of play, rolling to 25-10 wins in both the fourth and fifth games to keep its season alive. Morgan Brooks, as Hamilton’s libero, got lots of credit for her defense as Carrie Von Muench put up six kills. Alyssa Babcock, Hannah Sorosky and Rachel Holcomb all served well as the Emerald Knights moved on to face top seed Brookfield in the Class D semifinals. Morrisville-Eaton saw its season end in the first round of the Class C-2 playoffs. The no. 6 seed Warriors lost to no. 3 seed Beaver River 25-17, 25-10, 25-18 as Danielle LeBlanc earned seven kills and Rachel Morris added nine assists. Alyssa Matusczak got six assists as M-E finished with an 8-8 record.
