Still in charge of the neighborhood, the Oneida girls volleyball team maintained its perfect Tri-Valley League mark by knocking off rival Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in a three-game sweep Wednesday night.
In each of the games, the Red Devils led early, only to have the Indians take over. VVS was up 8-7 in the opener when Oneida took over, closing the game on an 18-6 push as, with Paige Pendleton’s series of spikes, it won 25-13.
It was a more pronounced turnaround in the second game, as VVS was up 17-11 before the Indians shut things down, using a series of great serves from Shannon Dowling as the key to a 15-1 outburst that helped Oneida win again 25-18.
Once more, Oneida trailed in the third game, but a 5-3 deficit turned into another 25-18 conquest to close out the match.
Dowling, with 15 assists and six aces, set the tone as Pendleton finished with 12 kills and Lena Reginelli earned 11 digs to go with her four kills. Melissa Murawski (five assists) and Carley Parker (four kills) made solid contributions, too.
On the VVS side, Stephanie Siriano put together six kills and six digs, while Katelyn Bowers added six assists and Rebecca Przybyski finished with four assists.
A night earlier, the Oneida boys volleyball team improved to 4-2, rallying from an early deficit to beat Living Word Academy last Tuesday night in four games.
The Lions prevailed in the opener 25-17, but the Indians dominated the second game 25-14 to pull even. In a pivotal third game, Oneida pulled it out, 25-23, and it did the same in a 25-23 fourth game to seal the match.
Shawn Ano led the Indians’ front line with 17 kills and five blocks. Kevin Cavanagh added seven kills and Sam Adams contributed five kills, four aces and four blocks.
Travis Morrison proved versatile, with eight kills and 12 assists, with Sam Adams contributing five kills, four aces and four digs. Mike Ellsworth contributed four kills and Andreas Vogelsberger earned three kills.
