In all, 21 wrestling teams gathered at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Saturday afternoon for the annual Central New York Invitational. And the host Red Devils had a strong effort, ending up in fifth place with 108 points. Oneida also competed and was 11th with 61 points as Chenango Valley, with 187 points, edged Adirondack (162.5 points) for the team title. Aaron Prichard gave VVS its lone victory at 140 points. He beat pinned Kyle LaBarge (Mohawk) in 2:31 during the semifinals, then engaged with Camden’s Tom Confer in a hard-fought final before emerging with a 7-3 decision. Two other Red Devils got close to the top. Dylan Kavanaugh was in a tight 125-pound final with Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton’s Dan Gormley, but could not get on the board in a 2-0 defeat, while Nathan Walts, in the 145-pound title match, fell to Connor Kleitz (Chenango Valley) 15-1. Oneida’s Matt Fisher gained third place at 152 pounds when he shut out VVS’s Gage Patry 7-0, while teammate Connor Russ pinned Chenango Valley’s Ricki Clemons in 46 seconds for third place at 119 pounds. Connor LoMonaco was third at 140 after edging Jacob Miller (Cooperstown) 6-4. Back on the VVS side, Josh Parkhurst beat Taylor Short (Holland Patent) for fifth place at 160 pounds, with Brian Ervin sixth at 285 pounds as the Indians’ Tyler Miller blanked Travis Herringshaw (Mohawk) 5-0 for fifth place at 171 pounds. VVS saw its meet against Whitesboro snowed out, but Oneida did compete Wednesday and lost to the Camden Blue Devils 45-36. Eighteen of Camden’s points came from forfeits, while the Indians got no similar break and found itself down 15-0 after LoMonaco lost to Tom Confer 10-7. At 145, Lon Palmer got Oneida on the board with a second-period pin over Luke Mack, the first of five straight wins that put the Indians in front. Fisher pinned Tyler LaPlant in 3:46, Shane Smith (160) finished off Sebastian Best with 36 seconds left and Evan Stoffle (171) took two periods to record a technical fall of Spencer Soules. But after Josh Sobieraj got a second-period pin over Jacob Mahl, Camden took four of the next five matches and went back in front for good. Tyler Havener, at 285, did beat Danny Christmas 6-4 with an overtime takedown as, late in the meet, Russ pinned Tyler Campbell in 33 seconds and Nick Hopkins, at 125, shut out Alex Monteith 9-0.
