Nearly a week had passed since the Marcellus girls soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season to Jamesville-DeWitt — a loss that didn’t seem so bad in light of the Red Rams’ subsequent 8-0 destruction of defending Class AA champion CBA.
Still, the Mustangs were bent on recovery — and it did so by sweeping back-to-back games on the weekend.
First, Marcellus went to Jordan-Elbridge on Friday afternoon and took a while to take over — but when it did, it proved emphatic as it beat the Eagles 6-1.

getting on the board with Tia Segretto’s unassisted goal. Slowly, the Mustangs’ advantage began to show as, with 18 shots, it started to connect with more regularity.
Jessie Nye, with two goals and one assist, and Kathryn Busa, with one goal and two assists, led the Mustangs’ balanced attack . Alayna Todd, Jackie Epp, Elizabeth Zimmer and Molly MacLachlan all got goals, too, as Brielle Filtch, Nicole Dorio and Becca Nolan contributed assists.
Without any rest, the Mustangs returned home to face Ilion in a non-league game on Saturday and put even more on the board during an 8-0 shutout of the Golden Bombers.
Taking 20 shots and leading 3-0 by halftime, Marcellus kept finding the net as Nye and Busa both finished with two goals and one assist. Epp also scored twice, with Dean and MacLachlan earning single goals as Todd and Nolan got assists, too.
On the boys side Friday, Marcellus went to Skaneateles last Friday night and took a 1-0 loss to the rival Lakers.
For much of the game, the Mustangs were forced into a defensive mode, Sknaeateles attacking with speed and aggression. Only the great work of goalie Mitch Schoenbrun, who finished with 13 saves, kept it close.
In fact, it was 0-0 into the second half before the Lakers’ Spencer Parker broke the deadlock, scoring off a feed from A.J. Richichi. Marcellus could not answer.
