Through a 24-hour period that covered Friday and Saturday, just about all of the area high school soccer teams, boys and girls alike, found some kind of competition – and most of them would flourish.
That would include Jamesville-DeWitt’s pair of sides, both of which gained impressive non-league victories.
It started Friday with the boys Red Rams hosting Liverpool and edging the Class AA Warriors 1-0. The only goal came on a first-half free kick where Zander El-Hindi flicked it into the middle – and Noel Williams headed it past Warriors goalie Joe Gilbert.
Once again, J-D’s defense came through, containing a persistent Liverpool offense by forcing them outside and watching goalie Zach Tanner pick up six saves.
A day later, J-D’s girls went west to face long-time Class B power Marcellus and jumped all over the Mustangs on its way to a 4-0 shutout victory.
It was 3-0 by halftime, the Rams getting nice balance as Maddy Devereaux, Jessica Holmes, Tessa Devereaux and Olivia Ferlenda got the goals and Maddy Devereaux added an assist.
Fayetteville-Manlius saw its boys soccer team unable to beat rival Cicero-North Syracuse in the first round of the Northstars’ Optimists Tournament.
The Hornets and CNS played through 80 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime without a goal before a shoot-out allowed the Northstars to move ahead. Ryan Carter’s nine saves kept F-M in it.
At least the Hornets would bounce back Saturday to beat Rochester McQuaid 3-0, steadily attacking and using goals by Joe Mahr, Kris Alestalo and Brian Ward to prevail. Tyler Forbes and Alex Baynes joined Ward in the assist column.
F-M’s girls team, who won J-D’s tournament on Labor Day weekend, routed Nottingham 7-0 Friday in its home opener at Swan Pond to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Marri Ryu put together a three-goal hat trick as the Hornets had a big 6-0 edge by halftime.Allison Baynes backed up her lone goal with three assists as Morgan Same and Sarah Rosenbaum each got one goal and one assist. Brenna Kincaid found the net, too, with Meghan Kingsley and Hanna Lee gaining assists.
CBA, the defending girls Class AA champions, played on Saturday and trounced Fulton 6-0, the same margin by which it beat East Syracuse-Minoa in its Sept. 8 opener.
Alexis Koval drew all the Red Raiders’ defensive attention – and still came up with three assists and a goal, her passes going to Eva Gordon, who recorded a three-goal hat trick as the Brothers raced out to a 5-0 halftime lead. Caitlin McConnell had one goal and one assist, with Meg Hannan also converting. Taylor Gait and Marisa Romeo earned assists, too.
ESM didn’t fret about its loss to CBA – it simply turned around and swept to a pair of victories at the Cazenovia Tournament at the Fenner Street complex.
First, the Spartans topped Utica Proctor 5-0, getting two goals from Amanda Wall and single tallies from Alex Mceachron and Sarah Britton. Then it beat the host Lakers 2-0 on Saturday, both goals coming in the second half as Wall and Erin Marcy converted.
Manlius-Pebble Hill’s boys team is now 3-0 after winning the first of two confrontations with archrival Faith Heritage in a 3-2 thriller at the CNY Family Sports Centre on Jones Road in Baldwinsville.
The Trojans and Saints went back and forth all game, but MPH got out in front for good thanks to Mike Kardjian’s goal and two assists. Tim Goldman and Jun Lee benefited from Kardijan’s passing to earn the other goals.
The MPH girls side earned its first win of the season on Saturday, blanking Cato-Meridian 6-0. Terry Netusil scored twice as Haviland Hawkins earned a goal and two assists. Vicky Gregory, Dichaba MicGinty and Katie Blanford earned the other goals.
Bishop Grimes had a busy soccer weekend. On the girls end, the Cobras lost 3-0 to Bishop Ludden on Friday, but turned around Saturday to beat Henninger 4-1. In the latter contest, Abby Rogers, Morgan Brennan, Samantha Schaefer and Saryanna Servella-Gardner each had one goal as Rogers and Schaefer added assists.
The boys Cobras dropped a 2-0 decision to Tully on Friday, with Mike Besbiaty getting 15 saves to keep it close. Jeremy Caron and Tom Lamson had the Black Knights’ goals.
