With five preliminary wins behind them, the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team began to hit the heart of its schedule — and didn’t get derailed one bit. Even with Katie Webster mostly silenced in last Thursday’s game at Marcellus, the Brothers, no. 10 in the first state Class C rankings of the season, still pulled out an 11-10 victory over the Mustangs. Marcellus threw all its best defenders in Webster’s direction, and she did not get a goal, settling for a pair of assists. Yet the move backfired, as other CBA players stepped up, especially Taylor Poplawski, who registered five goals and one assist. Marissa Romeo, Caroline Webster and Sophie Racciatti each had two goals, with Taylor Gait earning a goal and three assists. With all this, CBA edged into a 7-6 halftime lead, then traded goals in a tense second half. Romeo’s tally with 7:30 left made it 11-9 and proved to be the game-winner as the Mustangs’ Nora Barry, who had six goals on the day, cut it to one with a minute left, but CBA held on. Two days earlier, CBA, no. 10 in the state Class C rankings, crushed Onondaga 20-1 at Alibrandi Stadium, notching 14 unanswered goals in the first half alone. Katie Webster, with five assists to go with her pair of goals, was in more of a supporting role as Caroline Webster and Poplawski each had three-goal hat tricks. Gait had two goals and two assists as Racciatti, Meg Hannon and Laura Bulman also had two-goal outings. Romeo, Michelle Wiese and Corey Hucko each got one goal and one assist as Natasha Grant also converted. On the same day, the CBA boys lacrosse team finally reached the win column, ending a five-game skid by playing a strong fourth quarter to beat Jordan-Elbridge 16-13. Having shown improvement in recent games, the Brothers withstood a back-and-forth battle. CBA appeared to gain control with a 6-1 second-quarter spurt that produced a 10-5 halftime lead, only to see J-E storm back and tie it, 12-12, by the final period. CBA would get the last run, though, its defense holding the Eagles to a single goal in the fourth quarter as Jake Stephens got the last of his 19 saves. Jared DePalma, Will Roberson and Nick Papayanakos each had three-goal hat tricks, with DePalma adding two assists. Cody Radziewicz earned a goal and four assists as Joe Dalfo got two goals and two assists. Jack O’Brien and Shane Murphy had two-goal outings, too, as Joe Vercillo and Joe Ehle picked up single assists. Jeff Guadagnolo led J-E with four goals and two assists. Then the Brothers shut out Bishop Ludden 18-0 on Thursday, getting 13 different players to score as it kept the Gaelic Knights off the board. DePalma, with a goal and four assists, served as the anchor as Ehle, Buckel, Roberson, Tully Dugas and Max Luthringer each scored twice. Ehle had two assists as Papayanakos, Murphy, Radziewicz, Riley Dowd, Ben Hogan, Nick Fusillo and Sars Bowman also took turns scoring.
