On a sun-drenched Wednesday afternoon, the Skaneateles girls track and field team stepped onto its new oval and welcomed the first of four meets within the OHSL Liberty division. Not proving to be gracious hosts, the Lakers dominated the proceedings, ripping past Solvay 92-48 and Westhill 100-47 before the day was done. Three different Skaneateles athletes earned multiple titles. Victoria Sakal set the tone by running the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds and sprinting through 200 meters in 27.3 seconds. Showing her versatility, Grace Van Der Ven followed up a victory in the 800-meter run (2:35.9) by going to the long jump and unleashing a first-place leap of 15 feet 8 inches. To top it off, Gabby Eckles, fresh off her winter success with the sectional championship volleyball team at Skaneateles, cleared 5 feet in the high jump and ha a top triple jump of 32 feet 5 inches. Elsewhere, Amanda Gray took the 400-meter dash in 1:04.2, while Madeline Adams ran 3,000 meters in 11:38 and Kaela Fiutak cleared 7 feet to win the pole vault. Skaneateles swept the relays, too. Sakal, Fiutak, Cassie Berg and Amelia O’Hara ran the 4×100 in 54.1 seconds, while Gray and Van Der Ven combined with Carly Strods and Erin Tonzi as the Lakers won the 4×400 in 4:27.2. Strods, Gray, Emily Wood and Danielle Mazzeo prevailed in the 4×800 with a clocking of 10:20.1. In the boys meet, Skaneateles lost to Solvay 84.5-56.5 and Westhill 102-42, despite Sean Cooper sweeping to titles in the 110 high hurdles (17.1 seconds) and 400 hurdles (59.8 seconds). Cooper, Calvin Davis, Paul Hamilton and Sam Kriever won the 4×800 relay in 8:46.5. Just three days later, both Skaneateles teams went to the Jordan-Elbridge Invitational and had some solid performances in the cold, wet conditions. Caroline Walton finished second in the shot put, tossing it 31 feet 6 inches, and also got second in the discus by throwing it 98 feet 7 inches. Gray was third in the girls 800 in 2:27.47, with Strods in fifth place. Madeline Adams was sixth in the 1,500-meter run (5:29.23) and Kaela Fiutak fifth in the pole vault. On the boys side, Cooper got second place in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.33, just behind Oswego’s Eli Tyler (1:00.58), and also was runner-up in the 110 high hurdles in 16.37 seconds. Tim Lewis sprinted to third in the 100-meter dash in 12.15 seconds and also cleared 5 feet 4 inches for third place in the high jump. Nate Schwab, Sam Kriever, Danny Wolfanger and Paul Hamilton were third in the 4×800 relay (9:18.79), with Hamilton also taking fourth in the mile in 4:55.43.
