WG wrestlers split, fall to Liverpool

Staying quite busy, the West Genesee wrestling team went 1-1 in two matches conducted over a 24-hour span.

In the first of these back-to-back meets, the Wildcats met varsity newcomer CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt and put together a 51-13 victory.

Only Ian Coolican, at 112 pounds, claimed a forfeit, meaning that 45 of the Wildcats’ points were earned on the mat.

Logan Dirk (103 pounds) and Jason Fitch (130 pounds) had the quickest pins, as Dirk finished off Andy Romagnoli in 1:34 and Fitch earned his fall over Joe Merola in 1:51.

Jon Fetterolf, at 135 pounds, waited until the second period to pin Brad Kogut, while Jason Heggelke (125 pounds) and Matt Nichols (160 pounds) got pins over, respectively, Dan Meile and Peter Koulouris.

At 145 pounds, Wajeeh Hasan beat Brad Delevan with a 17-1 technical fall. Heitham Wady (152 pounds) beat Zach Anderson 9-3, with Tom Ragan (215 pounds) beat Mike Schneider 7-2 and Nick Marco (171 pounds) edged Eric Thompson 6-4.

When CNY Counties League competition resumed at Liverpool a night later, the Wildcats took six matches – but the Warriors earned seven, and it made the difference as WG took a 33-27 defeat.

Matt Nichols (160 pounds) earned a 16-0 technical fall over Tom Harkness, and Fetterolf did the same at 130 pounds over Joe Fish. Everything else came through decisions, except for a 103-pound forfeit to Dirk.

Heggelke rolled past Nate Hathaway 12-3, while Jason Fitch moved to 135 pounds and piled up points in a 15-7 decision over Jake Bottino. Coolican beat Casey Guilfoil 9-2.

Liverpool won because it claimed six of the seven highest weight classes, including a crucial 145-pound match where Wady lost a 4-0 decision to Derek Eason. Luke Mersfelder, at 189 pounds, battled hard, but lost to Brendan Capria 14-9.
