Without much time to celebrate its epic overtime win over Baldwinsville, the West Genesee girls lacrosse team headed straight into Thursday’s Class A regional final, played against Section IV champion Ithaca — at Ithaca High School.
In what amounted to a road game, WG, the Section III Class A champions, blitzed the Little Red in the first half and rolled to a 17-7 victory.
Before Ithaca could even get settled, the Wildcats put together a stunning first half, attacking at will and scoring at regular intervals until it had a comfortable 11-1 margin. Even though WG’s defense would ease up a bit in the second half, Ithaca would not catch up.
Maria DiFato, with three goals and three assists, anchored an attack where Bre Hudgins had four goals and Lauren Michaels also scoring three times.
Mel Murphy had two goals and one assist, with Corso, Karlyn Tupper, Kellyn Savage, Mara Guy and Kara Datellas landing single goals.
Next Friday at noon, WG will play in the state semifinals at SUNY-Cortland against the Long Island champion, hoping to advance to Saturday’s final, as it sits two wins away from a second state championship three-peat to go with the one from 2001 to 2003.
