Cazenovia’s girls track and field team rose to second place during Thursday’s Section III Class B-1 championship meet at Canastota High School.
With a total of 96.5 points, Cazenovia beat everyone except its namesakes from Skaneateles, who won with 182 points. South Jefferson (71.33 points) finished third.
In the long jump, Cazenovia went 1-2 as Audrey Bowers won, going 14 feet 10 1/2 inches, and Paige Biviano (14 feet 6 3/4 inches) took second.
Four times, Biviano had to settle for runner-up finishes, amounting to 32 team points. She landed in second in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.2 seconds, just behind Homer’s Jaclyn Yonta (16.9 seconds).
In the high jump, Biviano cleared 4 feet 8 inches for another runner-up finish as Gabby Eckles (Skaneateles) cleared 4 feet 10 inches. To top it off, Biviano went 31 feet 11 inches in the triple jump, one inch behind another Skaneateles performer, Eileen Ford (32 feet).
Meanwhile, Bowers ran to third in the 100-meter dash in 13.4 seconds and fourth (27.8 seconds) in the 200-meter dash as Gianforte took sixth in the 200.
Hollie Marcelle earned second place in the 800-meter run, recording a time of 2:25.7 as Jordan-Elbridge’s Nicole Darling (2:20.4) prevailed. The Lakers also landed in second in the 4×400 relay (4:21.2), with Skaneateles (4:19.1) in first. Cazenovia went on to take third in the 4×100 (53.5 seconds) and fourth in the 4×800 (10:41.5) relays.
Ellen Burr was fifth (1:03.6) in the 400-meter dash, as Rae Tobey was fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:33.0) and Meaghan Liddell took sixth in the 400 hurdles. Laura Fitch earned 1,773 points for fourth place in the pentathlon.
In the boys sectional Class B-1 meet Friday at Marcellus High School, the Lakers earned 21 points, far from the winning total of 170.5 points Holland Patent put together.
Joe Bono threw the discus 131 feet 11 inches, yet still finished second as Westhill’s Tom Fisher won with a heave of 141 feet 7 inches. Bono also took sixth (38 feet 9 1/2 inches) in the shot put.
Nico Schmidt ran to third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.68 seconds. Pat Dermody was fifth (9:58.29) in the 3,200-meter run, while Eric Goldman was fifth in both the long jump (18 feet 3 3/4 inches) and triple jump (38 feet 4 1/4 inches).
